I'm for more nominations. There will always be fandoms that don't get matched but it's not like there's only this year's Yuletide. Unmatched fandoms will have future years. I personally think it's better to have more fandoms to entice people who want to join but are only comfortable writing in certain fandoms. The more fandoms, the more chance of finding four things you can write.

For my own nominations, I only have one that's for certain and many others to choose from. I'm waffling between picking something I want to read and something I'm willing to write. I've gone over the spreadsheet that they've started on LJ and there's almost nothing I'd be willing to write/want to read. But I know last year there were a ton of fandoms I was comfortable with and the spreadsheet/brainstorming are only a small portion. I just wish I knew for sure. The thing I'm most unhappy with (though I understand it) is that they won't be approving nominations until nominations are closed, so you can't know if others have been accepted and not nominate the same thing.

Yeah, it's always been that way, unfortunately. Ideally you'd get a little error-message type thing telling you which characters you've nominated that are duplicates, but that might be a horrendous amount of coding.

I think we're talking about different things. I'm talking about this new rule: "The tag mods will check, approve, and reject items in the tag set in the 10 days following nominations. We have discussed the possibility of going back to doing it while nominations are ongoing. However, we have decided that checking the nominations afterwards is more practical."

To some extent. In previous years sometimes the mods would approve a nomination before the nomination period closed, although once your nominations were approved you couldn't change them. ~ As a whole, what was nominated -- whether approved or not -- wasn't visible until signups.

I still tip my hat - in an entirely non ironic and respectful way -- to the Yuletide mods. It's a huge undertaking.

I second the mod appreciation. I've been following the LJ discussions and it sounds like there's quite a bit of wank they have to wade through each year.

And I'd rather some ongoing approval since they had the post that some people were putting what they had approved so others would know. I suppose they'll just put what they nominated now but the other way -- when they're approved -- you knew they couldn't change their minds and what they nominated was something you definitely had the option of offering. It's a little thing, and I do understand why they changed it, but that's my preference.

Yeah, that's why I said I wish there was some feedback during the nomination process to let you know if any of the fandom/character combinations you'd entered had been nominated already: granted, there's no assurance any particular thing nominated will be approved, but at least there wouldn't be "wasted" duplicate nominations.
