I know that Babyon 5 is supposed to be good, but hearing why it's supposed to be is really making me want to give it a watch. It sounds like Deep Space Nine, but done in the way I would have preferred. And the comparisons between the shows were what made me think of watching Babylon 5 in the first place.

If you like Deep Space 9, you should definitely watch B5. I personally prefer DS9, but they're both really good, and in many ways different takes on similar concepts.

DS9 and B5 are like cricket and baseball. There's enough differences so that they're substantially not the same thing, and one can seem strange and odd at first if you're used to the other, but ultimately, enough of the appeal is the same that a lot of people who like one should also be able to appreciate the other.

That's basically what it is: DS9 but with a script that is far more intricate and really falls together over the seasons.

B5 and DS9 are quite similar in a lot of ways. B5 has more of an overt mythological bent, I think. I always think of it as DS9 with a shot of LotR for flavour, particularly in the Earth/Minbari plots and the Vorlon/Shadow plot. The Centauri/Narn arc has distinct overtones of the fall of the Roman Empire about it as well.

I'd say, while it has a very similar setup to DS9, in terms of setting and certain arcs (the Cardassia/Bajor and Centauri/Narn arcs are thematically very similar), B5 has a different tone to it. It's more operatic and mythic in places.

The two shows were shopped around at the same time, definitely. But DS9 is more of a plot driven show. B5 is more a character driven show. While both shows take place on a space station and have character go through upheaval, the hinge points for B5 work on the characters development and not so much on other turns of events.
