Shows You Enjoy Where the Characters Aren't Likable

(Anonymous) 2014-09-20 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much what the title says. I'll kick it off by going with Torchwood. I liked the campyness and silly plots of the show (well, the campyness of the majority of the first two seasons anyway...) but christ did I ever dislike the main characters. When one of your characters' first scene of the show introduces them as a date rapist (Owen) then you know there's going to be a problem. The only one who I found remotely likable was Tosh, but even she got grating sometimes

Except for Ned Stark.

*spoiler alert* Obviously, he didn't last long.

Always Sunny in Philadelphia? But I guess the fact they're all so unlikeable makes it all the better when bad things happen to them.

Tbh, shows where the cast are awful people are usually more fun than where everyone tries their hardest to be good.

Shingeki no Kyojin.

The characters are either dull as shit or annoying as hell. I'm only reading for the conspiracies and mysteries surrounding the titans. I'm rooting for Beast Titan and the Titans to eat everyone at this point in time.

Scandal Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2014-09-20 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Scandal. I'm addicted to the show and its constant drama but while I find some of the characters compelling, not many of them are actually likable. Quinn is shrill and constantly looks like a deer caught in headlights. Huck is kind of creepy and his "boo hoo, I'm addicted to torturing people" thing got annoying. Stephen left after the first season, thank God, but the only thing he ever did was flirt with women while simultaneously angsting about how he was probably going to cheat on his fiance as if he had no control over it (he later admitted that he did cheat on his fiance but the second season revealed that they apparently got married anyway). Abby is just constantly fucking annoying and douchey and has a perpetual smirk on her face. For all that she hates on republicans and considers herself liberal and open minded, she spent almost the entire second episode snidely referring to call girls as "sluts" and "whores" and looking down on them even though said call girls were shown to be nothing but nice and sympathetic.

Fitz is just a straight up asshole (seriously, are we supposed to root for him? I can't tell anymore). Even Olivia is a dick. I still can't get over the fact that tried to ruin Abby's relationship with David by falsely accusing and framing him as someone who committed domestic violence in the past (she did this because Abby had a very traumatic and abusive relationship with her ex-husband and knew she would immediately leave David if she thought he was similar). As much as I don't care for Abby, it's beyond fucked up to try and ruin someone's first chance at happiness in years by deliberately triggering them into thinking about their abusive ex-husband (keep in mind that David is shown to be an upstanding person and that Abby practically worships Olivia at some points).

imo one of the only likable characters is Harrison and that's mostly because he was too boring to hate most of the time. Annnnnnd now he's dead.

Scrubs and How I Met Your Mother

I'm not saying JD and Ted are bad people, but god I find them fucking annoying.

I like Mad Men, which really doesn't have any likable characters at all, although of course part of the problem is that these characters live in a very different time, so they say and think things we would never say and think, and looking at the really early seasons, even they would never want to admit to having thought in later seasons. But beyond values dissonance they can be hard to watch. Even Peggy, who started out as the only real likable one, has had awful moments.

Archer. Deadwood? I mean, there were some likable characters on there, but there were a lot of assholes.

Tosh was awesome (and yes, occasionally annoying), I wish there was more Tosh appreciation.

House. The characters were so unlikeable, but that's kind of why I liked the show. The asshole factor. It did get old pretty fast, but it was fun to watch the unlikeble people for a couple of seasons.

Boardwalk Empire (obvious answer) and Mad Men. Even though very few of the characters are likable, they certainly are interesting.

To an extent, King of the Hill. While there are a couple of characters I do like for one reason or another, they are also the type of people who would be absolutely reprehensible/obnoxious in real life. Which I guess is sort of the point, but w/e.

I adore Frank and Claire Underwood on House of Cards. They're so fucking devious and nasty. But I adore their relationship with each other and how much they love each other. They actually make me root for them and want them to succeed. In RL? I'd run a mile from folks like this. But on TV? Awesome.

And I love Raymond "Red" Reddington on The Blacklist. He has his own sense of morality and what's right--and he sticks to it. (It's back on Monday. yay!)

Big Bang Theory.

It started out okay but lately, most the characters are unlikeable. Sheldon treats Amy like shit. Penny has lost a lot of her earlier charm. Leonard is so fucking annoying and entitled. Bernadette and Howard are awful people. Raj is an ass when he's drunk. The only one I like is Stuart. I feel really bad for him but he's not a regular.

But I still enjoy enough episodes to keep slogging through the crap (though it's getting close now).

I'm surprised nobody's said Breaking Bad yet. Though that's less "all characters are unlikable" than "main character is a fascinatingly terrible human being."
