Let's talk about musicals

[personal profile] aboutelle 2014-09-20 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you like musicals F!S?
If so which is your favorite? Do you like musical movies too or do you only count live performances? What is the catchiest tune ever?

Yes! My fav is Phantom of the Opera, but in a way it's also a bit atypical music-wise. From the older ones I just love Hello Dolly!

As for catchiest tune? I dunno, but I love "Keep it Gay" from The Producers, and it's hilarious and catchy.

Funny songs are the best musical songs. Singing along always puts me in a good mood.

Yes! I love them! Movies and live performances.

I tend to like them dark, so some of my favorites are:

Phantom of the Opera
Les Miserables
Sweeney Todd
Jekyll & Hyde
Tanz Der Vampire
Elisabeth
Notre Dame de Paris

Jekyll & Hyde is one of the few musical I've seen live and it was so good. It was a small theater so we were sitting really close to the stage. The feeling during the crowd songs when the people sung right at us but also looked through us was incredible.

I can only enjoy musicals if they are not set in modern times. Because I can imagine that maybe, back in the 1800s people actually DID break out into song for no reason.

And my favorite that I have seen is the movie version of Sweeney Todd. My favorite to listen to (and that I will one day see) is The Lion King.

Wait, you mean you don't break into song for no reason? ;)

I love musicals! I can't really say that I have a favorite, though Les Miserables is pretty high up there, followed by

The Lion King (and the other Disney musicals to be honest)
Wicked
Jekyll and Hyde
The Phantom of the Opera
Next to Normal
1776
I have a soft spot for the Green Day musical, I love the covers. 21 Guns is haunting.

I do like the movies, even when they're bad; I mean, the Jekyll and Hyde movie musical has fucking David Hasselhoff! (Okay, so it's a staged performance, does that count as a movie?) and the Jesus Christ Superstar musical movie is perf.

Catchiest tunes: Confrontation, both the one from Les Miserables, and the one from Jekyll and Hyde, especially given the J&H one is sung by the same person playing two roles. Also from Les Mis, Do you Hear the People Sing? and One Day More. 1776 has the whole "Lee" song, which, WIN. JCS's "The Temple" is fucking catchy too though, ngl.

Musicals! :D

I'm not fond of musicals at all, but I do love Phantom of the Opera. I fell in love with the organ intro after only a few seconds, and it's still my favourite piece.

I've seen a great stage performance more than twenty years ago, in Her Majesty's Theatre in London. And I've watched the movie with Emmy Rossum, which I liked for shallow reasons like the gorgeous lingerie. *g*

In general? Not really (in that I don't go out of my way to watch them; I'm the same about opera.)

However, I adore Into the Woods.

Broadway sounds like a terrible place where it's always the same 5 shows with a different cast. Am I wrong?

Eh, I'm not so much into musicals. But I did enjoy Tommy and Miss Saigon when I saw them.

Hi, I'm F!S's resident musical theatre snob. I love musicals, particularly dark/complex ones. Hate jukebox musicals. Movie musicals count, but should be considered a separate category. The catchiest song is either Oh Happy We! from Candide or "That Old Piano Roll" (cut from Follies, but on a couple albums and used in the beginning of the overture).

Some of my favorites are:
-Company
-Sweeney Todd (NOT the movie)
-Titanic
-Nine
-Cabaret
-Grey Gardens
-Pal Joey
-City of Angels
-1776

Fiddler On the Roof. I occasionally break out in "If I Were A Rich Man," and I am never happier than when I encounter a big old farmhouse with two staircases so I can sing the verse about one long staircase just going up, and one even longer coming down.

Wicked. I know that's played out and makes me not a real theatre fan, but I fucking love Wicked.

I love musicals! My favourite is probably Billy Elliot, I listen to that soundtrack on repeat. Great music and I like the setting.

I generally prefer lighter musicals, like Dirty Rotten Scroundels. There was a great musical playing in London a few months ago called Ushers. It was about theatre ushers and utterly hilarious. I'm really sad that they didn't have a soundtrack to buy. :/

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is probably my alltime fave (ahhh Howard Keels voice!). I also love:

Hello Dolly
Guys and Dolls (i saw live in Seoul and fell in love again)
Singin in the Rain ( its FUNNY y'all )
Sound of Music
Hairspray

As for catchiest...idk, I've had I Don Quixote stuck in my head for a good long while! I also have Pirates of Penzance phases

I love musicals.

Favorites are ... oh probably a toss up between Phantom Of The Opera and Singing In The Rain.

I can't even name my favorite show tune though. How do you even choose?

I LOVE musicals. My all time favorite is Into The Woods. Les Mis is also up there. I've also been really obsessed with Matilda the Musical and Next to Normal recently, though that is mostly cause I just saw them recently. That's not even close to a complete list of all the ones I love though. That would be a very long list.

FUCK YES MUSICAL THEATRE

-Assassins is fantastic and really needs to get revived again
-Recently got super into Stephen Sondheim (see above) and realized how excellent Sweeney Todd is on a music level, also Into the Woods
-Really want to actually see Drood on stage, the soundtrack was great and it seems really fun
-I have a weird soft spot for Oklahoma! despite its terrible, terrible campiness because we did it in high school and it was way too much fun
-I very nearly tried out for 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee when the local theatre group was going to put it on despite the fact that I would have been desperately underqualified because it's that fucking good

As for movie musicals, there seems to be some kind of weird disconnect between what musical theatre fans want out of a movie musical, and what directors of movie musicals want. There's a few (Chicago, Sweeney Todd, to some extent Les Mis 2012) that are pretty good, but that's kind of despite the musical element? It's treated as a secondary element, which is contrary to why we like the damn thing in the first place. Idk I'm kind of spitballing here.

Musicals are awesome (and yes, I include movie versions in that). My all-time favorite is Hello, Dolly!, and CATS is up there too. Recently I saw 1776 and The Producers, and really enjoyed both.

I'm not really a fan of musicals (I tend to avoid them but there are a couple I like).
My favorite is Rocky Horror, not including Disney movies I like. I've never seen a live musical. I'm sure it's probably a whole different thing. Can't say, really.

Goodness I love musicals. Disney movies, Broadway, musical tv shows, cartoons, episodes of Buffy...if it has singing in it I will watch it. 1776 has the special honor of combining musical, historical, puns, and Mr Feeny so it has a special place in my heart.

I think I prefer movies vs live performances, but I've only been lucky enough to go to one professional performance (Avenue Q) so it's not a very tested theory.

I grew up watching Singing In The Rain - such a great movie, if you can ignore all the shitty stuff that happened on set. But of course that wasn't stuff I knew when I was a kid.

I saw The Scarlet Pimpernel on Broadway about fifteen years ago and it was amazing. I still listen to the soundtrack all the time.

I have to say I prefer live theater musicals to movies, but movies are pretty good too.

I LOVE them.

Movie musicals and stage musicals.

Favorites are Wicked, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The King and I, Moulin Rouge, recently added Legally Blonde to the list, 1776, Across the Universe, and many many others.

edit: I also very much enjoyed the Shrek musical. The songs were surprisingly good.
