Re: Am I an Asshole?

I have to hold back from people who use netspeak if they're over the age of fifteen - especially on serious posts. The thing is that I have to remember my audience - on a book or writing forum, it probably wouldn't make me an asshole to say something. Facebook? It would make me an asshole.

... of course, thinking "writing and book forums are for smart people who don't use netspeak, Facebook is for people who also don't know the difference between 'they're' and 'there'" also makes me an asshole, doesn't it?

TBH, I know the difference between "their" "they're" and "there" but
I don't really care to proofread to change it.

nayrt

And this is absolutely fine. As long as you accept that some people will think less of you for it. What annoys me are people who don't want to take the time to write properly AND insist that they be taken seriously. It's having their cake and eating it, too.

Is "netspeak" now the same misspelling/grammar errors? Like I thought netspeak was specific language and spelling, not just ignorant/wrong.

AYRT - No, not really, I just mean that people who use netspeak might not realize how immature they seem to some people. But I also realize that it might be a pretentious view, because I'm used to corners of the internet where writing well was important and netspeak was actively discouraged, compared to Facebook where things are more laid back.

I actually regret the there/they're/their comment now, because I really try not to judge. I can barely do seventh grade math and it always makes me uncomfortable when people make jokes about "idiots who couldn't figure out change at the register."

ayrt - gotcha. And really, judging on that I don't think you're an asshole.

Neither do I. And I get you on the change thing.

That was my awakening. I get (and still sometimes do) SUUUPER frustrated at folks who can't write well, or even write badly on purpose. And then I try to remember that I have an 8th grade math level. Addition and subtraction are hard for me, let alone anything else. The only way I've gotten through college math classes was by practically camping out at the tutor's office.

So....if I have trouble doing something like subtracting 256 - 123 = ? (it's the borrowing that fucks me up)...maybe it's okay if other people have trouble writing.

Define "netspeak" -- because I still throw in a "lol" here and there, though obviously not when I'm trying to be serious.

Depends on what you mean by "netspeak." If I'm having conversations online to use emoticons or "lol" to convey expressions that might not come across in my writing. I dunno, I just tend to write more how I speak if I'm chatting. I wouldn't write that way for a report though. I also find that my serious writing tends to come across as really formal and sounds nothing like me IRL. :/
