I don't understand why it is "edgy and pretentious" not to like bland characters like, say, Captain America or Thor, and prefer more fleshed-out characters like Tony Stark or Black Widow instead. I don't mind being called an asshole but I don't think I'm pretentious or trying to be edgy.

Characters like Captain America wouldn't be as bland if the writing treated them better. I hate that everyone around him just accepts that he's good and nice and that's that, and if there's any distrust of this super good guy, it's cursory at best and used to show that the other character is ~too cynical and jaded~ and it's the fault of the other character... and not that Captain America is legitimately extreme and an outlier on the moral scale in his own right.

Same goes for Superman and everyone else like that.

Yeah, I pretty much agree. Cap used to be my childhood hero and I love him in the comics. I was really disappointed when I realized how bland they made him in the MCU. Same thing goes for Thor - he's actually pretty funny in the comics - and poor, poor Hawkeye.

I still hate Superman though. (But I hate Batman too, so it's okay?)

Captain America is less flawed than Iron Man, but I think he's just as complex. His struggle simply goes in a different direction--Iron Man has trouble doing the right thing due to his various issues, and Cap has trouble applying his old-fashioned morality to a complex world.

(If anyone has links, feel free to drop his famous speech to Spider-Man in Civil War. I think it's proof that whatever Cap is, he's not bland.)

Yeah, I agree (See what I said to the anon above you). I love Cap in the comics - and he was actually more interesting than Tony in Civil War - but the movies made him so "good" I can't stand him. The weird thing is that I used to dislike Tony in the comics and still do, but I really find him entertaining in the MCU.
