knitting

I'm trying to learn how to knit. I got a Beginners Kit but apparently they define beginner different from me. How can i learn how to do more than basics and read patterns? I can't make heads or tails of drawings/descriptions so i looked up some videos but they were the very basics.

You're being really vague. Why didn't the kit work for you? Did it not explain things properly? Was it just not what you were interested in learning? What do you already know? What do you mean by 'more than the basics'?

It had a little booklet with various patterns, but the patterns look like cryptic codes and it never clarified what anything meant...it had an abbreviations key like '1ws means do 1 whatchamacallit stitch' but it wouldn't tell me what a whatchamallit stitch is or how to do it. I have trouble visualizing things so their explanations did not help me. I know how to cast on, cast off, knit, and purl. And switch between knit and purl stitches. But that's all I know.

See if there's any stitch-and-bitch organizations in your area, they will totally teach you how to knit for free.

Also, yeah, I have no idea what the problem is, can you elaborate? Like, is there some abbreviation in your pattern that you don't know what it means? Are you trying to cable? Just being very specific in your youtube search can help a lot.

How would I search for one of those? Would they literally say 'Stitch and Bitch' or something else? ;) Should I go to a yarn store or something? idk if we have one of those....

I don't know how to follow patterns at all. I can't visualize things well so it just looks like a string of cryptic letters and numbers to me. I'm trying to do anything beyond just knitting and purling...like, I watched a video that showed how to do 'moss stitch' by alternating knits and purls between rows but it didn't look like the picture at all when I did it myself.

Yarn stores are fantastic and usually very helpful. They will also usually have knitting classes but more of the type, "we'll teach you how to knit this one specific project." Stitch and Bitch is the generic name of the club, and should return a good Google result, but any kind of knitting club will be similar.

The thing about patterns is that you don't especially need to be able to visualize it, just follow what it's saying and it'll magically turn into the correct thing (or at least that's how it always seems to me). You also need to give any kind of different stitch some time to start working itself out, it always looks weird for the first two or so rows. Try knitting a four-inch swatch of moss stitch and by the last inch or so you should have either figured out what you're doing wrong, or it will have worked itself out.

It's really hard to troubleshoot this without seeing what you're doing, so unless you've got photos/video, I really think that yarn stores or knitting clubs are your best bet. Good luck!
