I hate this guy that I work with. He hangs out around my cubicle on break and I just want to tell him, "Listen, I don't like you and I don't think you like me, so why don't you give me some space?" but there's no way to say that without being, you know, a dick. How do you guys deal with annoying coworkers?

Avoidance, mostly. I'd make myself scarce when I know he'll be around, or have busywork you can do so he hopefully sees your busy and leaves you alone.

Guess that's the only way since I can't break out headphones. Thanks for the advice. :)

"Sorry, [annoying guy], I can't talk right now because I...

1) have a lot of work to do
2) am way behind on my reading
3) really need to concentrate on this e-mail/project/whatever

... so I'll catch up with you later, bye!"

Earphones. A book. Have something that makes you look busy, even if you're not busy. But most of all, the realization that it's okay to smile and tell someone that you can't talk right now and then behave as if it's perfectly reasonable to request some space, because it IS perfectly reasonable.

I used to have an annoying co-worker who would stop by my desk when I wasn't there and read my Far Side comic calendar. This, and a bunch of other creeper things he used to do, bugged me.

Make a joke about their hanging around your desk too much. Like, "should I put out some coffee and a chair for you, dude?" Or "you hang out at my desk more than I do, what's up with that?" Something jokey-not-jokey that lets them know you're aware of it and you don't really like it. If you don't like them and they aren't that crazy for you, you've got nothing to lose by being a polite asshole about it.

Fart loudly and graphically every time he comes near you.
