I found out the other day that someone had a similar idea in a fandom to mine -which I did a drawing for earlier in the month-, right down to the selection of characters (minus one I'd planned to use). I'm not *active* in this particular fandom (in that I follow other fans and read fan fic), so I'm not on the up & up of what goes on and all, but upon discovering this, I felt sick to my stomach and now I'm anxious about doing anything further with my take, for fear of being accused of idea theft. And I swear, I had no idea someone else was doing something with the idea, too.

I feel like I should continue on with my take, but I really don't want to be on the backdraft side should someone accuse me of theft, waughhhh.

Oh, I can so understand this: it's part of the reason I read very little in whatever fandom I'm writing for.

Without knowing the particulars, let me say this: If what you did made sense, then it's not at all surprising that it made sense to someone else in the same way.

If you're talking content, then I doubt anyone will bad an eyelash. If you're talking style or composition, well, just vary your a little. (It's only when a piece is almost identical in every way -- composition, style, color palette -- that people might call foul.)

If you're really woried, you could mention or acknowledge the similarities, perhaps?

Yeah, it's content mostly. I think I'm startled more than I normally would be, since this is the first time I've really gotten into an aspect of a fandom that lots of other people are into (normally I'm on the "fringe" of things), so the whole "similar wavelength" thing is taking some getting used to, uahhh.

If anything does come up, I'll acknowledge the similarities, but stress it's purely coincidental and hope for the best, haha.

But I'm glad I'm not the only one who's felt the same in similar circumstances. I tend to hold off from reading fan fic not written by friends for about the same reasons... or why I don't really pay attention to RP-based stories in one of my fandoms either.

If you're really worried, you could note when you post yours that you've seen the other person's, and maybe say something along the lines of 'Great minds think alike'

Honestly, though, there's often just not that many completely unique ways to draw certain groupings -- unless you both made all the characters penguins or Jesuits or something :p

I had something similar happen with a fic I've been working on forever but haven't published anywhere. After much debate with myself, I decided to keep going with it because I really like my fic and don't want to scrap it or change a major sideplot because of a coincidence. It's really nerve-wracking, though. I'm sorry you're dealing with that.
