Must write it and post it. Block her ass and turn off anon asks. She can complain on her own little tumblr. Hopefully she won't spend too much time on it. She'll probably find something else to get upset over soon enough. If you're uncomfortable posting it on your main tumblr, post it on a second one.

I'm sorry that your fandom is apparently run by an asshole, anon. If it helps, I'd totally read your meta. What fandom/pairing is it?

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2014-09-21 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's for Scotty/Uhura.

Honestly, I've just been pulling away from Trek fandom lately (especially the reboots) because I can't help but think of how much EPIC FAIL the third movie is probably going to be. But re-watching the fifth movie, I kept think of how love, in all its forms, was a major theme of that film. And how the introduction of Sybok and the Scotty/Uhura mutual crush -- even though they're elements that have been heavily criticized -- really work to flesh out that theme.

The problem is that I dislike the way Spuhura was done and make no secret of it (although I'm not planning on mentioning it in my meta), but there's one user (a huge Spuhura shipper) who goes bat-shit over anything involving Uhura and the Scotty/Uhura relationship in particular-- insisting that it's "mind rape." And that you can't possibly like Uhura as a character if you ship Scotty but dislike how Spock and Uhura was done in the new films.

So I'm debating whether or not to tag it "Uhura." Or even post it at all really. I don't know that it's worth the headache...

Thank you for elaborating. :)

I can't blame you for wanting to distance yourself from that fandom. I've heard that the fandom can be pretty damn terrible.

I'm not too familiar with Star Trek outside of TNG, so would you mind explaining why she'd think it would be mind rape? And ugh, that's just utterly ridiculous. Just because you ship Scotty/Uhura and not Spock/Uhura doesn't mean that you dislike Uhura. That's just ridiculous and it just reeks of her being mad that not everybody ships her ship.

If you don't want to deal with the headache, I understand. The Uhura tag is pretty big, isn't it? Maybe it will get lost in a sea of posts and she'll miss it.

Sybok, one of the characters in the film, has the ability to get people to confront their "pain" and relieve them of it. He uses this technique to turn people to his side and manipulate them. We see him try it on McCoy and Spock. For McCoy, he forces him to re-live the moment he chose to euthanize his father, while for Spock, he has him revisit the scene of his birth and his father's censure for being "too human." He tries to take their pain away from them to "convert" them. The premise with him is that he's kind of a false preacher.

In regards to Scotty and Uhura, early in the film, we see that they're supposed to go on leave together and they're quite affectionate (Uhura gently touches Scotty's face). This is BEFORE they meet with Sybok. Later on, Sybok gets to Uhura (converts her) and this scene happens:

Scotty awakens to find Uhura holding him in her arms.

UHURA
(soothing)
Easy, Scotty. You're back with us.

SCOTTY
(testing her)
Uhura. I had the strangest dream. I
dreamt a madman had taken over the
Enterprise.

UHURA
Dear Scotty, he isn't a madman.

SCOTTY
(realizing she's a
convert)
He's not?

UHURA
Sybok's put us in touch with feel-
ings we've always been afraid to
express.

Uhura gives Scotty a loving look.

SCOTTY
(uncomfortable)
I... er... have to get back to the
transporter.

Scotty slips out of her arms.

UHURA
But there's so much I want to tell
you.

SCOTTY
Maybe when I'm a wee bit stronger.
I dinna think I could take it in
my present condition.
(under his breath)
Or yours.

I thought it was a really important scene because it showed how Scotty wasn't willing to take advantage of her when she was under Sybok's influence (it reminded me of a guy not taking advantage of a drunk woman). And I thought it showed how much they cared about each other. That even though there's a mutual attraction, Scotty understands that she's not fully in her right mind at the moment and thus he won't do anything. Hence why he makes that remark about her "present condition."

But this user INSISTS that Sybok MIND-RAPED Uhura and PLANTED feelings for Scotty in her head. When, in the case of McCoy and Spock, this isn't at all what happened and, especially, when Scotty and Uhura were already quite close BEFORE they met Sybok. If anything, what Sybok did is the equivalent of drugging Uhura -- of removing her inhibitions -- but SCOTTY didn't do anything to hurt her. On the contrary, I'd say he did the right thing in this situation.

And, unfortunately, I know she won't miss it…I'd put money down on it in fact. I suspect she posts here as well…on anon.

I've got to watch this movie. Wow, anon, it is no wonder why you ship them. That scene is utterly fantastic and Scotty is fucking fantastic in his handling of the situation. Yeah, I don't think that he planted those feelings in from what you've told me. It seems that user is just twisting things in order to shit on the pairing. Ugh, I don't even know tgem and they already piss me off.

Aw. Do you have an account here? You could post the meta on it and privately link it to your friends in the fandom as well as other Scotty/Uhura lovers. That way you may not have to deal with her shit.

Re: Vent thread

I know! I love that scene.

I get that there wasn't a whole lot of build-up between them (although there are some cute scenes of them together in the TV series) but they're kind of like Neville and Luna to me -- they've known each other for years and because I loved them both individually, I can totally see how they could fall in love rather easily. It helps that they're more of side characters (rather than the main trio) because that justifies why their relationship had less screen time.

I just think Star Trek V is horribly underrated -- there's so much exploration of love in the film!

From familial love (Sybok and Spock)
To adopted family love (Kirk Spock McCoy)
The love of friendships (Sulu and Chekov)
Romantic love (Scotty and Uhura)
Love for a false prophet (Sybok's followers to him)

It's great. And I wish that people didn't bash the film so horribly.

Unfortunately, I don't have an account here. I have one on Tumblr and I'm a bit hesitant to open a new account here because I barely have time to keep up with that one as it is. And…I'd also feel a bit bad about opening a new account when I've been pulling away from fandom lately (and I've had less time with classes restarting truthfully.)

I totally get ya. Even if there's not a lot of build up, there's still a a few scenes where they just click. Since they've known each other for years, it isn't too much of a stretch to think that yhey might have developed romatic feelings for each other.

God, I really wished that I'd watched this movie when that Star Trek movie marathon was on. Only watched Wrath of Khan.

I understand. I'm sorry if I come across as pressuring you into doing it. I just hate that you seem to want to write and share this so bad, but are afraid that a BNF and her fans will bring their drama. Also, I totally want to read it now so my motives aren't entireless selfless. :p

I unabashedly love Star Trek V. I know I'm not supposed to, and I know that it's not an objectively good film, but I love all the character grace notes and how much the movie is about found family. And it's really funny, intentionally or otherwise.

I 100% get why you would feel hesitant about posting your meta, but it sounds like it could be interesting and you might bring about some discussion! If you posted a link I'd read it too; I thought Scotty and Uhura were adorable together.

I honestly don't see where she got 'mind-rape' from, but if you block her and her most enthusiastic followers you might not get a lot of lash-back? Even if she goes on her own journal to rant about it, she's just wasting her time. You should let her.

(Or, alternatively, post it under a new username? Or are there any tumblr accounts where you can submit meta and the like?)

You should totally post that meta because this little bit here is great and really thought out.

It's a pretty fricking shippy scene, anon. People have shipped for less. I say go for it!

DA

mind rape seems to be a big word for it but anyway they probably mean when Uhura was manipulated by Sybok and she sort of makes a move on Scotty who looks like he gets something is wrong and rejects her. It's never talked about ever again and they just remain friends.

honestly I see their point.
If you criticize Spock/Uhura as a bad pair for her character or not well developed (the latter a legit opinion tbh) it then sounds suspicious if you say she was good with Scotty when that pair wasn't developed and it does have problematic elements like manipulation that cannot get ignored.
Some Uhura fans don't ship Spock/Uhura but they are black women and they might find that kind of reasoning offensive for reasons it's easy to understand.
