Maybe this person is going for hyperbole? Trying to be funny but instead it comes off as weird and obsessive?

That's what I thought too, and hopefully that's what happened. However...you never know.

I hateeee when people suddenly switch pairings and don't warn for it, but at the same time I just close the page and go find something else. It isn't worth getting that worked up over.

Or better yet, reading something that looks like a nice, plotty gen fic that starts out really well, and halfway through, surprise!incest! Since there were no pairing indications on the fic, I didn't even get that much warning.

I think the most I did in that case was just email the author letter her know that there were no pairings listed on the fic and that she just might want to consider doing that. But I was hardly running around setting my hair on fire.

That said, I can see how something triggery (rape, incest, physical abuse, one character underage) could cause someone to react in a way that may seem OTT to someone else. And someone's NOTP could have those triggery things as part of it because of canon.

It's basically hard to judge, y'know?

Yea, that's true. I read incest fic occasionally but I know how much a no no it is for some people and think it should always be tagged. You shouldn't include something as squicky as incest in a fic without giving the reader warning.

Emailing the author was perfectly reasonable in this situation. (And it doesn't sound like you were hostile to them or anything, so good on you for being calm and rational.)

So...yea, I do get you. If something is triggery needing time to cool down or get your mind off it is perfectly normal, but if it's just the case of 'this pairing is stupid'...that's a bit of an overreaction.

I'm sure there are situations where people have legitimate reasons to be upset, though.

This. There is this one ship in my fandom in which the two characters remind me way too much of myself and my stalker. Getting a surprise face-full of that is guaranteed to throw me for a wobbly. I tend to keep it to myself mind, but cup of tea and a few hours hiding in my room might actually come into play.
