No, I'd look like a person that was giving it a medically accurate description.

I'd be much more inclined to think that a person who automatically assumes "drug overdose" means an illicit or controlled substance was the moronic one.

I dunno. You know when someone says "AAAaahhhctuallly I think you'll find spiders are actually arachnids" Technically correct, but totally asshole material.

Call me an asshole if you want, but I find that the general perception that alcohol isn't a "drug" and therefore people who drink "don't do drugs" is some bullshit, since most of those people are first to look down on people who are unfortunate enough to have to deal with addiction.

So yeah, I'll be the first asshole to point out that your perceptions are wrong and you should probably check some privileges or whatever the kids are doing these days.

He does this sort of thing all the time; I'd reccomended disengaging.

I think you're on the wrong side of this one, dude. Words have both denotation and connotation. You're dictionary-definition right, but the term "drug overdose" has a commonly-recognized connotation that you're deliberately ignoring, which actually makes your usage less specific and readily understood.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-09-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm aware of that.

What I'm doing here is pointing out how backwards this particular social perception is, and in doing so attempting to change the connotation.

AYRT

Thing is, there are complexities to illegal drug usage that aren't there with legal drugs like alcohol - America's ridiculous War on Drugs, for one, which makes it harder for people with a problem to get help and treatment. To say nothing of the fact that street drugs can be cut with all sorts of other toxins because there's no oversight in production due to their illicit nature. I get that you're trying to weaken the mistaken idea that alcohol isn't a "real" drug, but I think you're overlooking some important differences in the process.

You're not trying to change society here, dude. Take the good fight where it matters. An Amy-Winehouse-statue-secret thread that will be buried and forgotten within 24 hours isn't really the place to take your noble stand.

What you're doing here is being obnoxious is what you're doing here. You're not going to change anything by arguing with someone on Fandom Fucking Secrets.

An overdose is an overdose, no matter what the substance, Jesus Christ. And this is coming from someone who works in an ER.
