I don't really think that's a trend... promoting one's on fic on one's tumblr/journal/whatever system you use isn't new by any stretch of the imagination. I don't actually know many writers that don't do that. It's not so much to drive up the number as to say "Hey I did this thing for this pairing/fandom!" so that the people you know will be into it know it's there.
