Tumblr!

A lot of the anon kudos are actually Tumblr users who've been linked to the story by the author via their own Tumblr. I see it happening a lot. Author posts a link on Tumblr to the latest chapter (often with a pretty fanfic banner on top to make the post stand out) and, voila, the fic suddenly gets 30 new anon kudos seemingly out of nowhere!

It's quite the trend and gets fanfic a *ton* of hits.

And what's wrong with that? You seem to be assuming that the followers on tumblr don't read the fic, just kudos it, where the safer assumption is that they're following that writer because they want the earliest access possible to their writing.

I don't think they're saying that at all? They're just pointing out that that'll drive up kudos and hits. They're not making any value judgments about the people who give the kudos and hits.

Like the anon below said, you completely misunderstood my comment. O__O I follow several fanfic writers' tumblrs and love seeing them post fic banners and updates. I was merely explaining to OP why some fic might have a ton of hits; it's because of Tumblr followers.

I don't really think that's a trend... promoting one's on fic on one's tumblr/journal/whatever system you use isn't new by any stretch of the imagination. I don't actually know many writers that don't do that. It's not so much to drive up the number as to say "Hey I did this thing for this pairing/fandom!" so that the people you know will be into it know it's there.
