OH man. I'm an Olicity shipper who stays out of fandom except to read the fic. Reading this secret makes me glad that's the case.

Eh, that happens with every [shipping-obsessed] fandom. Harry/Hermione shippers lambasting Hermione/Ron shippers for the exact same behavior, Zutara v. Kataang, etc. Unawareness is a hallmark of a shipping fan.

I'm not into Arrow fandom (although, Oliver/Felicity all the way), but I can guarantee to you that Oliver/Laurel shippers do the same thing.

As a Laurel fan I can confirm that Olicity shippers need to stop shitting on Laurel to prop up their ship. It's not cute.

Can't we all just get along? I love Laurel and Oliver AND Felicity. Hell, maybe even as a threesome, though I am partial to Tommy/Oliver/Felicity. I could go for some Tommy/Oliver/Laurel, too. That's practically canon.

It's ridiculous, since Laurel and Oliver haven't even been a thing since S1. S2 was more about Laurel as a person, not Laurel/Oliver.

Laurel's perceived as the competition. Her character is destined to become Black Canary and be with Oliver in the end (at least as far as comic canon goes), so they trash her because they're worried that Olicity's going to give way to Laurel/Oliver eventually. It's classic shipper behaviour.

I like both Oliver and Felicity, they're close to being my fav characters on the show, but if they were to get together Oliver would screw her over like he does every single other girl he dates. If only for the drama.

Sadly the oversaturation of Felicity on my dash has made me kind of dislike her (which I know is TOTALLY unfair). But I hate the way that there are only three ways that fandom can engage with female characters: ignoring them completely, hating them with the same venom usually reserved for serial killers, or putting them on a pedestal and shrieking about how utterly perfect they are (see also: Hermione Granger and blonde woman from Vikings).

In some ways the abject love can get more annoying than the hate or the negligence; you can tell they've ceased to be a character and are instead just a viewer avatar.

OP

That Olicity shipper has since managed to clog up my dash with picspams and gifspams of literally every Olicity incident in the series plus blabber on about how awesome Olicity is in asks.

Oh man, the shipping wars in Arrow are terrible. I've managed to stay away from it because I really don't ship Oliver with anyone.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me neither. Oliver Queen is the worst part of Arrow tbh. He's one of the only fictional characters who has ever triggered me into a panic attack. I just don't understand why anyone would ever want him near any of those fabulous ladies?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
How so...? Can you elaborate?

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-09-25 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm curious why you don't like Oliver.) If it's not too personal, of course!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I just straight up don't like the way he treats people. He's a really terrible friend (he was HORRIBLE to Laurel in season two and I'm really uncomfortable with the way he treats Felicity and Diggle), he's not a great brother, he keeps making the same mistakes over and over, and the way he treats women is just...not okay. He's a massive hypocrite, he doesn't seem to care about anyone's problems but his own, he's a pathological liar, and he's a bully.

I might be okay with this if he learned from these mistakes and grew as a character, but he hasn't so far and I doubt he will.

There's a scene in season two with Laurel and Oliver in the hallway of her apartment building where he just goes off on her, blaming her for the way she's feeling, making it about himself, and mocking her for the issues she was dealing with at the time (depression, substance abuse) right before he told her he was done caring about her. It was straight up verbally abusive. There's no other way to describe what that scene was. It was verbal abuse. She was standing there, crying, flinching, and he was yelling at her. It was hard to watch (and the reason I will never watch that episode again) and worse than that, people sided with him. It was really harmful to actual people who have dealt with verbal abuse, which I have. (This is the scene that I mentioned was triggering to me.)

Basically: Arrow!Oliver Queen is my father.

The best way I've ever heard Arrow!Oliver Queen described is ''he's a bad person who sometimes does good things.''

Don't get me wrong, I have my issues with Green Arrow from the comic books as well (Smallville's Oliver Queen was the only one I genuinely loved) but Arrow!Oliver Queen is just in a whole different ballpark of awfulness. Sometimes I have to mute the TV when Oliver's on screen.

I watch for the awesome ladies and Diggle.

Oh wow. That got long. I'm sorry. :)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
He was a kind of awful friend to Tommy, too. I still think Tommy had every right to be utterly pissed at Ollie; sure, the job was nice, and Tommy wasn't exactly a paragon, but he used Tommy so hard it wasn't even funny. In fact, the episode where Tommy's ghost turns up and forgives Ollie everything just... annoys me.

And for all he's vowed never to kill again over Tommy's grave... dude, that wasn't even half the problem. It hasn't even changed Ollie's viewpoint or personality. It's an empty promise, pretty much.

(Yeah, okay, I mostly watched season one for Tommy. And yes, I am still annoyed by the fact he was apparently killed off mostly to provide character angst for Laurel and Ollie and split them up again.)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-26 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, he was really awful to Tommy. Tommy had his own character flaws that I didn't really like (as much as I loved him, he was kind of a Nice Guy at times with Laurel) but he didn't deserve any of the shit that Ollie pulled.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-09-26 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked Tommy. (

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-09-25 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
not at all!
It's interresting to hear another perspective on a character! I passed these episodes because I don't enjoy the topic of substance abuse for some reason, so i didn't see the scene.
I have a different impression of him, but what you've said makes sense. He lies a lot but that is due to the whole secrecy thing, imo.
There's a lot of Oliver so not liking him rather complicates things for you.( I don't trust Arrow to have any character growth, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-26 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wish I had skipped those episodes tbh. They basically dealt with Laurel's substance abuse by having her bullied into getting help. It was so disrespectful. But I probably should have known better than to expect a CW show to handle depression and substance abuse with any kind of respect.

Haha, it does kind of complicate the viewing for me. I wish I could quit the show altogether, but Laurel and Thea are my girls and I keep getting sucked in by promises that they'll have storylines. It's not that bad actually. I just keep a book handy and mute it whenever Oliver's on screen.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-09-26 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's some multitasking! At least Arrow has pretty visials.
I started to watch for the actor who plays Laurel's dad, and it doesn't seem that his plot is going anywhere eather. I agree that it's fun despite its flaws.)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
The Arrow fandom is literally the worst fandom I have ever come across. And I was a part of both the Harry Potter fandom and the Supernatural fandom. Not only do they say absolutely disgustingly misogynistic things about female characters who are not Felicity (when it comes to Laurel: ''I hope that bitch [Laurel] eats a bullet and dies/overdoses/I used to like her before she started dressing slutty (wtf?) and acting a mess/I hope Felicity bitch slaps that whore into next year/she's the reason Tommy's dead (what?)'') but one of them has started a petition to get Katie off of the show, they're constantly on her Instagram and Twitter insulting her acting/her appearance/her family/her friends and THEY HAVE LITERALLY MADE DEATH THREATS AGAINST HER.

Meanwhile, none of the cast or crew have done anything to stand up for her. They have, however, stood up for Oliver and his actions numerous times. So.

Arrow's a mess all around.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-09-25 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not in the fandom, so I've no idea about this. I just read fic. I don't really care about shipping wars but harassing the actress is a big no-no.
