The books are just sad upon sad upon sad. My MIL wants me to watch the show, but I don't want to. At least, not until it's over and I can just watch it all at once.

I've actually kind of been wondering if the books are better then the show, because I'm not seeing what the fandom seems to be seeing.

Maybe it's that I can't get into ships where one party is technically cheating but I have no interest in Jaime/Claire and I can only see myself continuing with the series if things pick up and other characters begin to get expanded on.

And Dougal is kind of a weird character for me right now, there are times when I want to like him but all the attempted rape isn't my thing. I think I just like his actor.

But is it even "technically" cheating? I mean, her husband is not even alive - he's not even a sperm travelling toward an egg at that point. He's non-existent. It's not like she can get a divorce or an annulment for a marriage that might take place some 200 years in the future.

Also, I really do enjoy all of the ethical arguments that crop up with scifi/fantasy's mostly impossible happenings (time travel, body swaps, etc).

AYRT. True that the morality of it isn't clear cut when it's a very fantasy plot line. But this is just a personal thing for me where I can't get into a couple so quickly when you spend your introduction to a series concentrating on someone's marriage.

It's really, really just my own feelings and obviously I don't blame Claire for going into the marriage with Jaime under the circumstances but we are supposed to know she's also conflicted about it. So it's just not a ship I'm into at this point.

I don't mind Claire with Jamie right now, because who knows when she'll get back to the 1940s. However? Jamie does NOTHING for me.

AYRT I said above but I don't necessarily judge Claire being with Jaime under the circumstances, it's just my own thing that makes me not really into the ship.

I think I'm also just not that interested in Jaime so far either, Claire I'm sort of into? I don't know. I feel conflicted about these series because it feels both interesting but also kind of slow and there's no character I fully love yet.

He *is* rather odd-looking. He just keeps making me do double-takes, i dunno. She's got less curves than I usually like, but there's something very...i dunno. Ethereal about her nude scenes, so i'm definitely liking her. Plus - she's so tough! I love her nurse side.

Unpopular opinion, but I agree with you re: the technical cheating. I find it uncomfortable and it interferes with my enjoyment of Jamie/Claire

AYRT. Yeah I know it's a fantasy setting where the morality is more then unclear (her husband not being alive yet, not knowing if she'll get back and then the added pressure of needing to get married to be under Scottish protection) but it's still JUST ENOUGH to make it hard for me to like the ship.

I don't judge Claire at all but she is conflicted about it herself so I don't see why the audience needs to be completely into the idea of Claire/Jaime.

Any sort of hint of cheating plot lines are just not my thing. I just can't get into a ship that way. I don't hate the characters because of it but the ship itself is my problem.

I agree. I know she had her reasons and all (I gave up on the book midway through, though, and it's been a while since I attempted to read it) but were I in her shoes, I wouldn't consummate the marriage and would hope anybody offering to marry me for my protection would understand that. Like, we could lie and say we did, who'd really know the difference? And if they need blood on the sheets (because, you know how awful knowledge of how the vagina and hymen actually work was back then and even now) it would be really, really easy to fake that. Take a needle and poke yourself, then bleed on the sheets. Tada!

The man who plays Dougal has awakened some kind of latent Daddy kink I never knew I had, and I find him waaayy hotter than Sam/Jamie, to the point where I wish the show would deviate blasphemously from the books and Claire would ride off with Dougal into the sunset. Not before riding him like a stolen horse, though. On camera. At least twice.

I've never read the books, but in the few episodes I saw before our cable went bye-bye I really liked the actress that's playing Claire (I found the male characters pretty boring.)

Is this the series written by that woman who compared fanfiction to selling her kids into white slavery and seducing her husband? I got so into watching that trainwreck back when it happened.

I only heard about that in passing but authors that are so against fanfiction crack me up.

Ugh, I know that this shouldn't affect how I read, but...yeah, I'm frowning distastefully at my books right now. I still love them, just maybe a little less.

She deleted all the evidence (I don't remember if it was up to four or five posts on her blog by the end) but I think fandomwank still has some screencaps.

What's funny is that I started reading Outlander before the series aired, because it sounded like it might be interesting. And there was something about it that just struck me as SO fanficcy - not the best of fanfic, and not the worst, but somewhere in the cliche-ridden id-fic middle.

I'm sure the author would be extremely displeased to hear that.

That would be because it kind of is... She based the character of Jamie on a Doctor Who character (and has admitted as much in interviews). The whole series is basically her head canon...

I'm with you on the Dougal train. Graham McTavish is sexy as fuck.

Uh, I need to amend my secret after the wedding episode and say -- Claire and Jamie cavorting nakedly for 75% of the episode? Ho-hum. Dougal putting the moves on Claire knowing she's just had sex and not caring, and gently taking Claire's chin in his hand with trembling restraint? Fuck me, where are my smelling salts??

I was amazed how Dougal thought they could just SHARE Claire now that she's married. I understand why it could be a kink for some but that really threw me about the character. One moment he saves Claire, then he's making his moves... He confuses me.

I gave up on this book early on, I don't get the appeal at all.

(It's annoying as hell though in the cross stitch tag on Tumblr - I'll be looking at patterns and WIPs and then all of the sudden this is there because apparently one title is "Cross Stitch"? It's fucking annoying.)

Oh God is that a series for those terrible Highland romance novels? The mother of my friend loved those...
