So Emma Watson was supposedly threatened by 4chan for that feminist speech she gave. They said they would release nudes of her. News sites were in a tizzy talking about how EVIL 4chan is.

Except it wasn't 4chan. It was a viral marketing group doing it to....show how evil 4chan is? http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-09-24/emma-watson-threats-actually-stunt-to-shut-down-4chan/5766882

And apparently they thought, "Let's not use actual examples of things they have done. We should trick people and lie to them! Because that is what the internet likes. being tricked and lied to."

Well, that's just great. So shutting down 4chan is more important than letting Emma take center stage with her message? Great job. Distracting people from what she's actually talking about and looking like an idiot while you're at it. I mean, I have feelings about how man-centric her whole thing is and downplaying the power women have to fight for themselves, but still. I'm glad she's standing up for women's rights, and these people are just making themselves look bad.

Not that I'd be surprised that someone would threaten her like that because people do it all the time. And it isn't exclusive to 4chan at all.

I dunno. I think Emma would be delighted that she could shut down those dudes. they so perfectly encompass everything she was speaking out against.

I haven't been feeling 4chan lately, but man they're really easy to put a blame on. Even in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm half convinced it's still 4chan pretending to be feminists pretending to be 4chan. Wouldn't put it past them.

Honestly, I didn't buy it that Watson had sent nudes in the first place. She doesn't strike me as that type of person. Sending really poetic, garish smut texts? Oh, yeah. On the fly nudes done in a hotel during a press junket? No.

I'm actually like 90% sure that this 'Rantic' organization is, in fact, a completely fake practical joke created by a bunch of people, most likely on 4chan. I highly doubt that someone named Brad Cockingham is actually the CEO of a viral marketing group, and the highly unprofessional text (most notably describing their clients as 'celebrity publicists') corroborates this.

I would assume there never were any nude photos of Emma Watson and the whole thing is a prank cooked up by someone because they think that's funny.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Thiiiis, not to mention that this marketing group is calling for the censorship of the internet because of 4chan, which sounds like something someone would write to rile everyone up.

I actually see someone less on 4chan pulling this and more someone from tumblr doing this on 4chan as revenge for all the garbage 4chan has pulled on tumblr. And it has nothing to do with women's rights but has more to do with getting 4chan shut down.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
That's really depressing. How could people really think, "Hey, let's make people think the world is more fucked-up than it obviously is?"

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-09-25 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
But if they used actual examples of things 4chan has done it would also have to include giving information to the police about the identities of pedophiles and unsolved murder cases, running campaigns against Scientologist churches that resulted in investigations and arrests, bringing people to justice for torturing animals...

4chan is 4chan. Sometimes good is done, sometimes evil is done, most of the time people are just looking for porn.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Is that the same Scientology thing that back-fired on them, I think it was called Chanology or something like that?

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-09-25 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, not talking about the demonstrations. That was a different thing. This involved getting a few local places shut down after it came to light that a few ex-members were being threatened with violence.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I've never understood 4Chan, but that's low on so many levels

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
ughhh. 4chan or the marketing group or whoever it is just need to shut up.

they're embarassing themselves and they look like tinhat conspiracy theorists. Emma Watson doesn't deserve that shit. her speech was well-balanced and dignified.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ha. I love this silly idea that "shutting down 4chan" would do anything. It's not like if the site shut down, all the shitty users die. They find new places. They rebuild, and then everyone will be languishing "Oh why won't they shut down [new site]??"

For the record, the shit pot is usually only stirred by three or four boards out of like, 30. /b/, /r9k/, and /pol/ are the constant offenders, but /v/ gets in on it if it's related to gaming in any tangental way. Shutting the entire site down would do exactly fucking nothing, and it'd put a lot of perfectly normal people out of a great set of imageboards for a broad swath of interests.
