Yeah, there's some annoying trends right now but we're still getting at least one interesting/unusual/artistic show every season. They might not always be everyone's cup of tea, but how could they? The problem is just we actually get to see nearly everything from Japan now--including the stuff that's really, really generic or just plain bad. A lot of that stuff NEVER made it over to the US during the "golden days" people have nostalgia before, because nobody wanted to fansub it/license it.

Also not everything in the "golden days" was so good. TBH, I find things like Cowboy Bebop pretty mediocre, for example, and I could never get into it, but everyone cites it as OMG AMAZING.

Nor can I...the soundtrack is great, though.

Well, think about the time period that it came out in the US. A lot of people had never even thought about an animated show doing the sort of stuff that Cowboy Bebop did (meant for adults, with a fairly gritty look and animation style, etc), so Cowboy Bebop was pretty unusual, which I think is why it caught a lot of people off guard. On top of that, it's constructed well--lots of good animation and use of film language, great soundtrack, etc. It makes sense to me that CB was so popular, and that it has a lasting popularity. It's almost like the B:TAS for anime (although I think I prefer Batman a little more).

That being said it's nowhere near my list of favorite anime and I do think it's pretty overrated. I still enjoy it, but I definitely think acting like something couldn't come out NOW of the same quality (when, like I mentioned above, I'd say there's at least one good show every season and often those shows are close to being as good as CB, if not surpassing it), so holding it up as "a show like they don't make these days!!" shows pretty clearly how behind you are on current series, at the very least. If not just...completely unwilling to accept things outside of your favorite era.
