Just here for the smoking fish.

Don't hold your breath. Fish can't smoke.

I agree.

That fish is hot.

I'd fuck that fish.

I'm hoping he's a herring. Smoked herring is delicious.

Yeah, there's some annoying trends right now but we're still getting at least one interesting/unusual/artistic show every season. They might not always be everyone's cup of tea, but how could they? The problem is just we actually get to see nearly everything from Japan now--including the stuff that's really, really generic or just plain bad. A lot of that stuff NEVER made it over to the US during the "golden days" people have nostalgia before, because nobody wanted to fansub it/license it.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Also not everything in the "golden days" was so good. TBH, I find things like Cowboy Bebop pretty mediocre, for example, and I could never get into it, but everyone cites it as OMG AMAZING.

If that image is from an anime, I would like to know which one, so that I can watch it.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it might be Space Dandy because there was an entire episode centered around a fish planet, but I'm not sure.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Space Dandy - episode 3 of the second season (or episode 16 overall)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like if your defense is "there's usually one thing a season that's not shitty", you're kind of fundamentally ceding to the fact that there's just less stuff on the top end. So while there was plenty of shitty stuff back in the day, and people do tend to be deluded by nostalgia, it's hard not to escape the idea that it has got worse in terms of the amount of really excellent stuff coming out.

THAT SAID I barely watch anime any more and almost exclusively keep up with manga so I have no expertise whatsoever.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're missing the point of what they're saying. There's just as much shit as there always has been.

People just aren't going to remember anything but the good stuff because it wasn't memorable.

Nah, I don't really think so. I think tastes have somewhat changed--we don't get as many, say, western-influenced action shows like Trigun, Berserk or even FMA/Attack on Titan, but that doesn't mean that things are shitty. Particularly since the "at least one thing each season" is a really conservative estimate, and IMO means "at least one thing each season that someone that likes anime could enjoy." Myself, I usually have at LEAST two things a season I want to follow, and several other series I later watch and enjoy (or that I hear a ton of good things about) but didn't have the time to consume on a weekly basis.

I was actually going to try to compare the average scores of the top anime of every year on ANN for the last 30 years or so to satisfy my curiosity to see if popular perception that anime isn't as good recently actually holds up, but...I've been working on it off and on for over 2 hours and I haven't gotten past 1997. I'm too lazy for thiiiiiiis...D:

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you, OP. I mean, fair enough if they are finding less to be interested in or there's less to their taste. But calling them all "shitty" because of that is...

What is a shitty bad anime to one person is a brilliant gem to another, so I really don't understand when arguments like this come about.

In general...

(Anonymous) 2014-09-25 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
People do that a lot. I know next to nothing about anime, but I hear people say "music sucks now" or "movies suck now" etc. I think the difference is that we remember what we all liked. I do think there were certainly upsides - for instance, the 90's had very silly movies (Honey I Shrunk the Kids, anyone?) but they were silly on purpose and didn't take themselves too seriously. So there's that. OTOH there were also a lot of duds. Same goes for music, and, I'm sure, anime.

I hear this a lot about Western cartoons. When people complain about how stupid cartoons today are, I just remind them that in the 90s there was a cartoon about anthropomorphic ducks who come from an alternate universe where hockey is a way of life and who now play hockey and battle an evil dinosaur on Earth.

(For the record, I loved that show. But it was ridiculous.

I think it's just human nature to idealize "the past" tbh. It's something we have an emotional attachment to, so we tend to focus on the good and ignore all the shitty parts. It's definitely not something limited to 90's; you have plenty of people who consider the 50's to be the best decade ever, and in the 40's there were definitely nostalgia goggles on for the 1890's. And the whole "everything new sucks, these kids don't appreciate any of the classics" mentality is something that can be seen across generations. It's kind of funny in a way.

I agree with you OP, lots of stuff probably gets missed because of other getting media attention.

There's always been more ambitious things such as "Paranoia Agent" (that is new-ish) and those meant more for entertainment (at the top of my head - "DRRR!"). You can like both, or one or none ;) .

However, RECS, PEOPLE! I've been recommended "Madoka" plenty times, but no time :P . It's apparently a deconstruction of magical girls. As for mine, I'd liked "No.6" but I have a weakness for dystopias.

My fav anime of all time would be "Fushigi no umi no Nadia" which is probably the cheesiest action/cliche/romance series ever made. But. XIXth century steam ... space ... er what-punk .

as someone who grew up in the "golden age" of anime (read: early 2000s), and as someone still really invested in the medium, attack on titan really isn't that good.

As someone whose experience with anime is 95% through cultural osmosis I have to say I've seen equal amounts of anime from today and anime from the 80s and 90s and I prefer the latter. I think the first anime I ever saw (not counting Superbook lmfao) was an OVA called Robot Carnival and I think I just prefer the older style overall. It's dirtier and a little more roughly animated, and that appeals to me compared to the smoothness of later anime. Also I have an easier time telling faces apart.

100% agreed.

There was so much shitty anime in the 80s/90s/early 2000s. People just don't remember it or never saw it because it didn't stand the test of time.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-26 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably a mix of older people being nostalgic and biased and younger kids who are new to anime, or losing interest in some of it, only seeing the stuff that left a lasting impact/is frequently rec'ed. Sort of like YouTube comments.

Yeah... I think like anon said up there, now we get a ton of stuff while back in the day, it used to be filtered. Now that anime is more accessible online we get to see everything. More quantity = more shit.

Not that there weren't any good stuff back in the day, though.
