I agree with you OP, lots of stuff probably gets missed because of other getting media attention.

There's always been more ambitious things such as "Paranoia Agent" (that is new-ish) and those meant more for entertainment (at the top of my head - "DRRR!"). You can like both, or one or none ;) .

However, RECS, PEOPLE! I've been recommended "Madoka" plenty times, but no time :P . It's apparently a deconstruction of magical girls. As for mine, I'd liked "No.6" but I have a weakness for dystopias.

My fav anime of all time would be "Fushigi no umi no Nadia" which is probably the cheesiest action/cliche/romance series ever made. But. XIXth century steam ... space ... er what-punk .

Ambitious Thing: Mawaru Penguindrum
Should've been a classic: Hikaru no Go
But really I could just watch it twenty times over: Romeo x Juliet

I also feel like mentioning Chrono Crusade here, just because no-one ever does.

Most of the Chrono Crusade fans I know seem to prefer the manga to the anime.

*thinks back to dat anime ending* Yeeeeeah.

OP who wanted recs: "Chrono Crusade"! Forgot about it! Only watched anime though, loved it because of 20s/30s New York and Catholic parody (yes, I'm Catholic xD). I'll check manga version of "Hikaru no Go" as I loved "Death Note" comic but hated the anime.

I admit that I missed "Romeo x Juliet" because of gender stuff :( . My trigger (only in media, which is wtf) is crossdressing that is a "cover-up". Probably started by "Twelfth Night".

Hikaru no Go is VERY faithfully adapted, but the anime isn't spectacular whereas the manga has Takeshi Obata *g* and IMO, it's a lot better than DN. Chrono Crusade is less faithfully adapted, and I DO think the manga is better there, too.

(incidentally, I see below that you loved FMA but disliked the manga/Brotherhood, and let met tell you I'm exactly the same)

If you haven't watched this yet you have some catching up to do:
Castle in the Sky
Princess Mononoke

Mix of entertaining and arty:
Princess Tutu (favorite anime of all time, if you like classical music, ballet, magical girls or fairytales YOU MUST WATCH THIS SHOW)
Madoka Magica (yes I'm calling Madoka arty, at the very least its visuals are unique and ambitious)
Shiki (If you're entertained by cynicism and gore anyway)

Arty:
Paranoia Agent
Welcome to the NHK! (would almost call this "entertaining" but this show makes me too miserable to call it that)

Entertaining:
Baccano!
Tiger & Bunny
Ouran High School Host Club
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (unfortunately the first season at least is needed to really follow TSR and it isn't as good. Fumoffu!, however, is hilarious, but not required...but still don't skip over it if you like the humor in the series at all)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Star Driver (...pretentious enough to be called arty too, I guess)
Free!
Toradora!

Guilty Pleasures:
Pretear

I LOVE Princess Tutu, and I fully believe it's underrated.

Princess Tutu is awesome. And Madoka is only 13 episodes, so I question why someone wouldn't have time for it but would for other recs? I guess there's the 3rd movie too but you don't have to watch it right away (I still haven't, actually).

Also, Princess Jellyfish is made of win, though fair warning that it doesn't really have an ending. But it's still an awesome journey.

I'd probably also recommend at least trying Attack on Titan. For big, massively popular anime, it is pretty good.

Poster requesting recs: Seen "NHK" mentioned a couple of times, but damn that is my life (work -> home -> work, long shifts), so I always ignored it xD. Will definitely see "Madoka", "Shiki" and "Princess Tutu" ... one day.

Avoided mentioning "FMA" as while I love it ... I don't like the manga or the second anime which is bizzare D: . I always dismissed "Ouran" while I liked the idea of wrecking stereotypes... hm, thanks for mentioning it :P . "Free!" feels totally for a younger audience (yeah, yeah, probably a bad stereotype D:) to me ... Never heard of the rest, but will check them out! Besides "FMP" :P, kinda under-rated it as a "war anime".

Just remembered "Saikano"! A sad, dystopian, war anime. Worth watching.
