as someone who grew up in the "golden age" of anime (read: early 2000s), and as someone still really invested in the medium, attack on titan really isn't that good.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood set a high bar in terms of quality anime and Attack on Titan just didn't reach it for me. Though I loved the mystery. I do think if season 2 has less crying and better pacing the show would improve a lot!

I tried Attack on Titan, but man it was trying SO HARD to impress on me just how AWFUL and HORRIBLE and HOPELESS everything was that it came around the other side for me and became hilarious. I knew intellectually that laughing about giants eating people is really messed up. But I just felt like every time a Titan did something bad and then side-eyed toward the camera it was saying "This is so horrible, right? Right? You have feels about this in a deep down adult place now, don't ya?"

I think for me it wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for all the crying and helplessness. Yeah, we got that the situation was horrible from the first episode. But then they kept hammering it in.

i'm just now watching that (i had only seen the first anime) and it's really different than the previous one. i really like it! and honestly, i do like attack on titan - it's just not as good as everyone totes it out to bed.

I enjoyed both FMA but for different reasons. I hope you enjoy the rest of Brotherhood. :)

I got into anime around the same time and I thought Attack on Titan was great. It's not my absolute favourite series but it has a lot to enjoy for me. I totally get why it doesn't work for other people though.

And it still doesn't account for the fact that the quality of anime really hasn't changed that much over time. As was already pointed out, we just have a lot more access to everything these days, instead of it being primarily the best stuff that got an English release.
