(Anonymous) 2014-09-26 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)I wish there were more games or books or movies/TV shows like it. But it seems like a rather uncommon approach to storytelling, sadly.
OP
(Anonymous) 2014-09-26 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)I just think there's something great in the idea of having the audience watch a group who they think is, essentially, the heroes and, over time, come to realize that they're anything but. And have the protagonists realize it themselves by the end.
Such as, for example, taking a setting similar to Star Wars and slowly revealing, over time, that the rebellion the audience has been rooting for is actually a band of terrorists. Or have us follow the "heroic" fascists and slowly reveal over time that they're working for a totalitarian state.

Can we talk about how great Spec Ops The Line is?
(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 05:05 am (UTC)(link)I think one of my favorite parts about it is, weirdly, how pretty some of it is. There's some gorgeous shots and some really cool things done with lighting and color, like all the blues in the aquatic colosseum. Really goes out of its way to get some variety in the environments and fight the military shooter = greybrown thing.
Re: Can we talk about how great Spec Ops The Line is?
My interface design teacher was senior game designer on spec ops: the line and he showed us some behind the scenes stuff and the amount of thought that went into minor details is so frickin cool, it's enforcing the story through every medium - gameplay, audio, visuals... A lot of it is not something you'd conciously notice, but it creates this sense of wrongness that's just awesome.
Also I LOVED how fucked off Walker got the longer you played. I'd stopped playing halfway through and came back a month or so later and I was so confused when I noticed how angry his lines were and how much more violent the kills became.
And the fact that I felt really uncomfortable when I was having fun blowing enemies up.
The Extra Credits videos really put it beautifully.
