It's not that...

When people say "Tumblr is the worst," they don't literally mean it's the worst. The problem with Tumblr, that gets people frustrated, is that it takes things that people LOVE and are extremely important to them and makes them hate the form in which it appears on that site.

Fapping to little girls, trigger people to kill themselves, sending rape threats, etc. -- the VAST majority of people will agree that these are terrible and should be stopped. But most people don't think about them or invest in them because they're things we find despicable. If every child porn site on the internet was shut down, I'd throw a party.

Why people hate Tumblr is because it takes things that should be fun -- like fandom and shipping -- or are important -- like social justice issues -- and twists it into petty bullying that completely robs the enjoyment of it.

You have to watch something you care about be twisted into something you don't believe in AT ALL. And that's worse for a lot of people than seeing something you hate because you ALREADY hated it in the first place.

There's a sense of betrayal involved.

Perfect explanation, thank you.

"The problem with Tumblr, that gets people frustrated, is that it takes things that people LOVE and are extremely important to them and makes them hate the form in which it appears on that site."

Exactly. I was in the Frozen fandom for around a year and there was just so much shit flung around (mainly due to ships) that when I quit, I deleted almost all of the Frozen posts I had on my blog just so nobody could associate me with it. I haven't been in a fandom this bad since Bleach (which I quit around the Fullbring arc) and even then, I preferred my time in Bleach over Frozen due to the fact that there was little to no social justice-ness involved ("You like Frozen? You're a huge racist! You like Kristoff/Hans? But they're boring and undeserving of any appreciation because they're white cis males! etc.). It was just terrible for the most part.

Yep. This explains the issues with Tumblr completely.

This is probably the best reason for why I still don't have a Tumblr account. I see enough Tumblr vitriol just as an outside lurker who goes to read a couple of fandom confession blogs that I don't want to get any deeper.
