It's not the worst. But its problems annoy me the most because, while I've never had any desire to participate in those other sites you mention, I have to use Tumblr because that's where fandom resides now.

You do know that Tumblr has all of that stuff as well right? Except when they are telling people to kill themselves, it is in the name of social justice.

eta: I mean, there are pedophiles on Tumblr that have people protecting them because of various reasons. People who send death threats because the person did something stupid/bad. People with tumblrs dedicated to how much they want to commit genocide against white people or men.

Also, due to how Tumblr works misinformation is EASILY spread and hard to correct. At least on something like reddit, things can be upvoted and downvoted.

Fwiw I agree with you, OP.

There are actual honest to god Neo-Nazis on tumblr, yet people always decide to complain about SJWs instead. I also wish I had a dollar for every time a post made by an obvious troll account gets cited as proof that "the tumblr hivemind" wants all cishet white men dead.

Most people remember when they were an obnoxious teenager, but like to pretend they never were We don't usually have a past involving pedophilia and convincing people to commit suicide.

It's not that...

(Anonymous) 2014-09-26 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
When people say "Tumblr is the worst," they don't literally mean it's the worst. The problem with Tumblr, that gets people frustrated, is that it takes things that people LOVE and are extremely important to them and makes them hate the form in which it appears on that site.

Fapping to little girls, trigger people to kill themselves, sending rape threats, etc. -- the VAST majority of people will agree that these are terrible and should be stopped. But most people don't think about them or invest in them because they're things we find despicable. If every child porn site on the internet was shut down, I'd throw a party.

Why people hate Tumblr is because it takes things that should be fun -- like fandom and shipping -- or are important -- like social justice issues -- and twists it into petty bullying that completely robs the enjoyment of it.

You have to watch something you care about be twisted into something you don't believe in AT ALL. And that's worse for a lot of people than seeing something you hate because you ALREADY hated it in the first place.

There's a sense of betrayal involved.

The difference is that those shitty attitudes stay on their own sites. I've never encountered them. Tumblr cancerous attitude, on the other hand, is everywhere.

If only Tumblr users stayed on Tumblr, I wouldn't hate them. It's so fucking gross when you see Tumblrmorons on LJ or DW.

1.Tumblr is where fandom is, so it's unavoidable

2.Tumblr is this cluterfuck of people who want white people to be erased from the earth, because all white people are racist and are evil and the only think you can do as a white person is admit you hate people who aren't white, okay? Being on Tumblr has made me less tolerant...

(Anonymous) 2014-09-26 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's why I hate it. Because my instinctive response now to a lot of issues brought up is to first think "cry moar" and roll my eyes. And I have to actively tell myself that these are really people who do have to face awful shit in their lives.

Before Tumblr, I found that sympathetic emotional response was much more forthcoming. I feel really jaded now, though, and have to remind myself constantly not to become bitter and intolerant.

There are some truly awful people on Tumblr, just like anywhere else. I'm more confused by people acting like they have no way of avoiding the awful. It's pretty easy to shape your own experience on any social media site by just unfollowing, blocking, etc. Hell, the tag thing makes it even easier.

I doubt tumblr is even close to the worst place on the internet, but I also doubt I've ever visited the sites you're referring to so I don't have the greatest frame of reference. That said, tumblr has problems and idiotic users like every other social media site, so I don't think it's that much different. More people around here probably visit tumblr than those other places, so they have personal experience with it and things to complain about. Makes sense to me.

I like tumblr but I also get exasperated with it at times. There are some truly interesting and informative posts about history/art/culture on there, but then there are also dozens of those kinds of posts that are full of misinformation and lies, and it's so, so easy to spread incorrect information around.

It's not the worst place on the internet but it's not perfect either, but tbh no website is.

Tumblr users please read this first, or at least the Teal Deer

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-09-27 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Your first reaction when reading some of the Tumblr-critical comments is going to be reflexive defensiveness, because you've seen a lot of people who are racist/sexist/heterosexist/assholes criticize Tumblr for calling them out on their bullshit. And those are the easy people to ignore. It's harder to ignore the people criticizing the site for legitimate reasons, so you're going to want to make excuses (every site allows for the easy spread of misinformation!) for them all, or just assume that the people in the second category fall into the first so you can insult them and try to convince them of your superiority. It won't work.

If you're like me, you like Tumblr because it actually got you to care. I was fully "poor people are just lazy," "racism and sexism are over because POC and women can go to school now" etc. and while I've no doubt that I'd have discovered my latent activist side anyway through all of the GSM advocacy organizations I've been part of, Tumblr is where it started, so I feel some loyalty toward Tumblr the same what I feel some loyalty toward the US, or my family, just to different degrees. If you're not part of it and you insult it to my face, I will unleash hell; but if you are part of it, we're probably insulting it to each other. Because it's difficult to separate part of one's identity from the whole, when somebody who doesn't share an identity insults it, you see it as them insulting you as a whole. It doesn't matter how superficial the identity is; just look at the shitstorm that comes up whenever people debate Apple vs. every other technology company (please don't do that here). Hell, I've gotten a death threat or two for expressing a positive opinion about Lea Salonga in Les Miserables without putting in a negative or even comparatively negative opinion about any other actress who's played Eponine. But they grew up either as fans of one or another, and so to praise one of them without mentioning the others is an insult to their childhoods, and to them.

TLDR; if you find yourself getting angry, realize this identity is really fucking superficial and that the only reason you're angry is because that identity is unnecessarily tied to all of these other things.

I have no idea what's up with this. I am on tumblr but i do what I want and avoid blogs that make me uncomfortable. I've never figured out how to use "feeds" though so maybe that's it. I just unfollow if something's bugging me. It's seriously one of the more calming places on teh internet for me. Animal pictures. My fandom pictures. (It's a small fandom, but really, i just follow blogs I like and it's NOT A PROB.) Where is all this otehr stuff hiding? IDK

And....you're saying Tumblr DOESN'T have those things the other sites do? I don't think you looked hard enough.

It has that PLUs all the obnoxious labels obsessions, oppression olympics, SJW fuckers, and more.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
As much as I like the site, these secrets are getting ridiculous. They're barely fandom-related, the threads end up trolling with a few actual attempts at arguing over social justice, and I really don't think you're going to change anyone's mind.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
I will never understand why people hate Tumblr so much. Yeah, of course there are obnoxious people on Tumblr -- any population includes obnoxious people. But I've always found it really easy to surround myself exclusively with decent, rational people who produce or discuss stuff that I care about. If someone's content is annoying you, there are a myriad of ways to stop seeing their content ever again, it's not that hard. If there's a problem I have with my own dash, it just makes people in my day-to-day life seem cruel and catty by comparison.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's sad when they're doing it by tearing down perfectly decent people, and completely missing points/spreading misinformation.
