Tumblr users please read this first, or at least the Teal Deer

Your first reaction when reading some of the Tumblr-critical comments is going to be reflexive defensiveness, because you've seen a lot of people who are racist/sexist/heterosexist/assholes criticize Tumblr for calling them out on their bullshit. And those are the easy people to ignore. It's harder to ignore the people criticizing the site for legitimate reasons, so you're going to want to make excuses (every site allows for the easy spread of misinformation!) for them all, or just assume that the people in the second category fall into the first so you can insult them and try to convince them of your superiority. It won't work.

If you're like me, you like Tumblr because it actually got you to care. I was fully "poor people are just lazy," "racism and sexism are over because POC and women can go to school now" etc. and while I've no doubt that I'd have discovered my latent activist side anyway through all of the GSM advocacy organizations I've been part of, Tumblr is where it started, so I feel some loyalty toward Tumblr the same what I feel some loyalty toward the US, or my family, just to different degrees. If you're not part of it and you insult it to my face, I will unleash hell; but if you are part of it, we're probably insulting it to each other. Because it's difficult to separate part of one's identity from the whole, when somebody who doesn't share an identity insults it, you see it as them insulting you as a whole. It doesn't matter how superficial the identity is; just look at the shitstorm that comes up whenever people debate Apple vs. every other technology company (please don't do that here). Hell, I've gotten a death threat or two for expressing a positive opinion about Lea Salonga in Les Miserables without putting in a negative or even comparatively negative opinion about any other actress who's played Eponine. But they grew up either as fans of one or another, and so to praise one of them without mentioning the others is an insult to their childhoods, and to them.

TLDR; if you find yourself getting angry, realize this identity is really fucking superficial and that the only reason you're angry is because that identity is unnecessarily tied to all of these other things.
