It's because a lot of fandom people are really fucking weird, and it's bad to be associated with them. Honestly, that's why I keep it hidden a lot.

Example: I'll openly admit to being a trekkie, to the point where I actually delivered an academic paper on star trek in front of an audience for crying out loud. This is because the word Trekkie has a lot of history behind it and isn't considered that strange. But I would never in a million years tell a person I'm in the "Korra fandom." I would totally tell people I like the cartoon and suggest it to them, but I assume (and I think rightfully so) the f-word would make me look like a freak, whereas just saying I like fandom-related things doesn't.
