Time zone woes, F!S in Europe

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ever since moving to the London from the US, Fandom Secrets updates at really awkward times for me (okay, midnight). So I always check it the next morning, and by then no one responds to my comments and it all seems dead. Except for weekends, yay.

Also I need to go out and make friends, but I'm trying to save money and so much of hanging out with people seems to involve going to pubs and having a lot of (expensive!!!) drinks.

Well, it's even worse here (F!S updates at 1 AM).

And London's just ridiculously expensive, so it's one of the worst places if you're trying to save money. Are you hanging out with colleagues or just trying to meet new people? Most capitols also have stuff for expats.

I'm here for grad school, so it seems like this weird in-between of "crazy young student" and "adult". There are clubs and stuff, though I've been too busy with school to check 'em out at all, and I'm kind of worried it's going to be all 18 year olds (and I'm 25 and self conscious lol). I do want to meet people though, I feel lame sitting in my apartment on a Saturday night. I'll be more fun when I start getting paychecks from my part time job though. I hope. haha

Could you meet people more through interest or habby-related things?

I hope so, I just need to find them! I'd take a class, like a martial art or something, though that sort of thing unfortunately costs money too. Thanks for the advice though!

25 isn't nearly too old, literaly just got back from a club where that was the average age.

What ends are you? I may be able to give some input.

welcome to the club, it's currently midnight here! and on weekdays it's even worse, it updates at like 1am

and then i'm either sleepy or tipsy or both so i can't always think things through, and i'm always worried i'm gonna embarrass myself. writing thoughtful and/or witty comments in your second language in the middle of the night is hard :(

Haha I really can't complain then. Sometimes on my late nights I see the new post, but I don't usually stay up much later than midnight.

The other time I lived abroad, it was Japan, and that was kind of nice. Updates would be in the morning, so I'd read them on the train to work on my phone, and kind of keep an eye on it all morning when I had free moments.

I've had Fandom Secrets at all sorts of times, lol.

Well can't help with the first problem, the UK does get shafted with the later update times.

For the latter, though, Move The Fuck Out Of London, prices will drop like a stone once you were away from that festering shit hole.

It's where my school is lol. I like London fine, but I think I'd like better being out of it. Noise outside my apartment sucks, lots of pubs in the area. And the prices, bleh.

As far as responding to comments, it's one of the major reasons I stay logged in, so all of the alerts go to my email and I can respond after I go to bed.

As far as meeting people, maybe suggest doing something with your classmates, meeting for something you would have done anyway, going to a movie or a museum you've been meaning to check out.

Maybe register an account? If nothing else that way you'll get notifications if someone DOES respond to you.

I live in the UK, so I feel you re:timezones, nonnie :/ It's either being sleep deprived or not participating in f!s discussions.

I have to get up ultra early or just stay up all night to catch a new post. So count yourself lucky, comparatively.

Yeah, I feel you. I am on GMT+1 so it is an hour later, and when I have school and such early the day after I just can't stay up, Which sucks (and also explains why I have been kinda absent lately*) Anyway I just got back from partying so it is now 3 at night and I should really just go to bed, but the going to F!S before sleep is too much of an habit for me.

*Not that I think anyone has really noticed, as it's been pretty gradual.

I know I don't always have a lot to say, Nonnie, but if you talk to me, I will always reply back.
good luck with saving money. I am trying to do that too; it's really hard. :(

Welcome to the world of every FSer not in the states, anon. Stay up late or don't get replies.

Are their Uni societies you can join that are activity based? That might be a way of meeting peopl although they'll be youngsters. Or try sussing out the cheapest drink at your regular and developing a taste for it. Unless you're hanging out with complete assholes no one should be insisting on buying rounds.
