idk, I kind of see it the same way as killing zombies or vampires or other beings that were human at one point and became monsters. They were once like the Gems, but they were so far gone and corrupted that most of the creatures we saw them fight on screen just seemed to mindlessly attack people. I do think they should have tried harder to talk with Lapus though since, even though she was unstable, she still seemed capable of reasoning
