So...does that mean I'm not black if I don't fall under whatever cultural mores you think make people black? Because fuck that.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Mte.

According to this, I'm not black. Apparently I don't exist. So my fellow anon, how is your current nonexistence going?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
My nonexistence is going pretty good. You?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Going pretty swell, actually. Might make a pumpkin pie later.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmm. Pumpkin pie. I like sweet potato a little better (OMG, does this mean I actually get to be black?!!! That's a *~culture~* thing!) but I wouldn't turn my nose up at pumpkin.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww, I still don't get to be black since I don't like sweet potatoes. I've been absolutely craving a pumpkin pie for a while, so I finally got the stuff to make it. I wish I could wish it into existence since the wait for it cook is painful.

My sentiments exactly. Thank you for this image. Saved.

I'd rather not exist to be honest. It's easier that way.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

I'm sorry to hear that. :( I know how you feel though.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you a black person that identifies as black? Or that the world identifies as black for you, regardless of how you feel about it? That means something, and would impact a character in a way it wouldn't a white Englishman. I think that was what OP was getting at regarding cultural identity.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, my skin is black. My parents' skin is black. Therefore, I am black. All this bullshit about culture determining race is bullshit. All culture determines is...your culture. And acting like each individual race is its own monolith is stupid and regressive.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you.

I don't think desi holds the same kind of "purely skin color" meaning that black does, though. Desi does have cultural connotations. The word itself literally is used to mean "traditional."

(Anonymous) 2014-10-01 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Acting like the concept of race can somehow be divided from the concept of culture is the biggest bullshit of them all.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-10-01 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
So that means your skin color has no impact on your daily life? You never experience race related bigotry? You may as well be white, for all the impact your race has on your life?

Great. But yes, you are very unusual and I do doubt you actually exist.

I'm pretty sure this is a case of miscommunication.

AYRT seems to have read culture as meaning the set of traditions, practices, and mores relating to her or his own group, when you seem to have used it to mean the wider culture in which her or his group lives.
