Your very first fandom

(Anonymous) 2014-09-30 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What was the first fandom you ever got into? How did you get into it? How old were you when you first got into it? Do you remember what kinds of things you were first exposed to (fanfic, forums, art, etc)? Did you have any really weird preferences or opinions back then?

Dragonball Z! Got into it because of a friend. Was first exposed to AMVs and then fanfics. I only read Vegeta/Bulma or Gen.

Probably Redwall...and even though I read the books in elementary school, it took until High School to find an online community.

I guess Neopets kind of counts too.

7th Heaven was the first "fandom" (we were not really fans) I remember participating in, and that was through the forums at Mighty Big TV/Television Without Pity. It's also where I first started writing fic. I was in my late teens/early 20s, and there was this weird dichotomy going on where on one hand we'd all complain about what a crazy bitch Annie was, but on the other hand we'd complain about how misogynistic the show was.

But we all agreed that it was a show full of wasted, withered potential.

In the broadest sense, in that I played games about them with toys and made up stories with OCs, my first is equal parts Star Wars and Star Trek. This began in elementary school.

In the sense of modern online fandoms, I can't remember if it was Sailor Moon (for fanart mostly) or Harry Potter (sooo much badfic). This was middle and high school, so starting when I was 11 (also when I got my first email).

Lord of the Rings. I read it back in fifth grade, which was when we got the internet. I spent so much time downloading fanart (almost all of which I still have!) and reading fics. I got an account at CouncilofElrond.com, which is probably still the best forum for book fans. Also, it introduced me to written porn and fanon!

My favorite thing? Boromir's Imaginary Phone

Well, I don't really like talking about my failed attempts in Final Fantasy, Legacy of Kain, and Transformers (Beast-era, mostly)... so I guess He-Man/She-Ra was the first fandom I was truly heavily active in. There was fic, art, and forums (oh, He-Man.org... I still can't believe they're around, though idek if the same folks I knew back then are still there). I had some fond memories, but I was also a petulant little teenage snot who had some really bad personal life issues at the time, so it kinda bled over into my interactions there, ughhh (I still to this day deeply regret how I treated a well-meaning beta). I'd drifted away from it, thankfully without any fandom drama. I guess given all that had happened from 2002-2004, it was probably for the best.

The first fandom I ever really participated in was Phantom of the Opera. I read fic, wrote fic, and participated in online forums. (There were a lot back in 2004-5.)

In the literal sense (online fandom, fic, etc) it was Twilight. I was into Bella/Jacob.

I don't know how I found it, I just randomly stumbled upon ff.net in a random search one time. I had no idea about it beforehand. I must have been like around 14 or 15, not sure exactly.

Probably Star Wars when I was a kid. I had a bunch of kid books, including activity ones, and loved it.

Star Trek, TOS and TNG. I was fifteen and a friend got me into it. All my fandom experiences -zines, filking, cosplay-were filtered through her because she got to go to cons and su

ch.

It was Angel.

Got into it a few years ago or so when I was 17/18. Managed to catch reruns on TNT and was hooked. Went straight for Angel/Cordelia fanfiction.

Gotta be Star Trek TNG. And then I discovered the 'adult fiction'. I remember reading it when I was 16 or 17, and someone told me they were uncomfortable talking to me about a sexual act because I was under 18.

Oh yeah, this was the TNG board on AOL. So this was '94-96. Yeah I remember AOL that charged you based on the minute rather than a flat rate. Maxed out mom's credit card that way… Oops.

Sailor Moon, probably.

I was ...12 when I first started watching it and 13 when I majorly got into the fandom.

I will always remember it fondly, even if I have absolutely no interest in it now.

I got into the Harry Potter and the Final Fantasy VII and X fandoms around the same time in 2003-2004. I got into it by stumbling upon Fanfiction.net if I remember correctly and then just continued to stumble upon fandom from there. I remember I used to love those character shrines.

I was just a lurker though, and didn't really become a 'real' participant in fandom until a couple of years later when I started to make fanvids. I remember translating this long Harry Potter fic into my native language though around the time I got into the fandom, which actually was quite good practice for me as I was just ten or so back then even if I would most likely cringe looking back at it now.. I don't remember all that much about that time though, except for being both horrified and intrigued by lemons and I used to sneak-read them, terrified that my parents would see them. (though that might actually be a bit later)

Sailor Moon and anime at the time but mostly Sailor Moon. I used to go into chat rooms and the occasional news group or forum.

A lot of the friends I made in a Sailor Moon chat room back in the day are still my friends today. These things can last for life.

I honestly can't remember if it was Inuyasha or Yu Yu Hakusho (I probably got into both of them within months of each other). I was around ten or eleven and I wrote truly awful mary sue fic on Quizilla that was thankfully taken down after they began making a bunch of weird changes to how the site worked

"Kim Possible" when I was 12. We didn't have cable, so I imagine I found the fanfic when I was looking for places to watch it online. Actually, I remember looking for fanart on DeviantArt first, then getting into seperate fansites (TV Tome, ronstoppable.net... there was another one I forget right now) that had forums where people could reccommend stories or kick around plot bunnies. It was my first fandom, so I don't think I had any weird preferences - I was just kind of a sheep back then, shipping the canon ships. :P

OMG this is so terrible but it was totally Titanic. I was 12. First exposure to fanfic (and first time writing it. Yup, I wrote Titanic fanfic. Lol away). First exposure to fan sites and the old web rings. First exposure to smut (and boy, was it bad. At the time I was so young and inexperienced that I was just titillated and thought it was amazing, but looking back, it was pretty awful. It all basically boiled down to get undressed, kiss, stick penis in vagina, orgasm, end).

I would say Pokémon, but I wasn't so much in the fandom for fic/art but learning and reading about the Pokémon themselves, and finding out information about new episodes and movies.

So probably Dragonball Z, I was in so deep and it was glorious.

Define "fandom" - online? x-Files and generation X, at around age 16. But I was really obsessed with Star Wars since age 9, and there were shows I really liked before that.

And I was actually very obedient and heeded adults only warnings in the beginning.

Really depends how you define "fandom" and "got into". I mean, I was writing fanfic and drawing fan art for Atari and NES games back in the late 80s and early 90s. When I first got a modem, the internet wasn't a thing most people could get at home yet, but I could go on local BBSes, and sometimes we discussed the X-Files (it was during the first couple seasons), comic books, SNES games, and various musical artists. When I first got on the internet, it was after having been introduced to Sailor Moon via friends on those local BBSes, so one of the first things I got involved in was the SOS campaign. That and a mailing list for my favorite obscure folk musician (Dar Williams), where I was a regular poster specializing in song parodies and They Might Be Giants references...

Star Wars.

My siblings and I used to dress up as Jedi and run around the backyard having adventures with plastic lightsabers. We owned a ton of Star Wars videogames as well - even this old PC one where you got to play as droids.

My very first fandom...technically, Harry Potter (I would write fic in my head and look for Sixth Book rumors when I got to use the computer, etc), and Star Trek TNG to some degree (I would visit startrek.com and memory-alpha to read synopses and info pages) but the first fandoms I got involved in reading fanfic and discussing things with other fans on forums were Star Trek TOS and M*A*S*H.

I was fourteen, started right after I got a new laptop. The first fanfic I ever remember reading was the stories on this Star Trek TOS page right here: http://scotpress.co.uk/story_archive/index_by_story.html However, I don't think those were the actual first fanfics I ever read. I don't remember discovering fanfic.

I also was a very frequent commenter to the M*A*S*H forum Best Care Anywhere. And I think I looked through every single page of stories in the MASH section of ff.net (I think it had a much lower proportion of crap than most other fandoms' selections on ff.net).

I remember I would read mountains of deathfic and angst and h/c in the MASH fandom (and there were *mountains* of deathfic and angst and h/c to be had, given the subject matter and tone of the show). I'm pretty sure it spoiled my fanfic tastes for life.

In Star Trek, I mostly remember feeling disgruntled a lot because McCoy was always my favorite.

Hmm, Naruto or Kingdom Hearts probably. I actually wrote and did fanart for Naruto, while I was pretty passive in the KH fandom (though I did make...a really embarrassing OC, good times).
