Re: So tell me what ya want, what ya really, really want
More stories that are based after Phantom Planet and finds a way to reconcile the peak of season 2 characterization with the stuff that happened. So far Ghosts in The Closet is the sole fic that makes me accept the finale and how it went down. I'm probably hypocritical for asking for this because I usually ignore PP myself.

Shit. I keep forgetting that it can also stand for that. I'm sorry.

and like that would be fine, if the show didn't act like she was totally in the right. Because well, to be honest, Danny is sacrificing a lot to continue being a superhero. and it often ends up making his life difficult or putting his parents/ family in danger. and for what? It was only pretty recently that people were very accepting of him. Most of the time he ended up getting treated badly by people around him and even his own parents. At the end of the day , Danny doesn't have to be Danny Phantom.
The show completely ignores that fact and plays him up like he's being selfish for not wanting to deal with all the crap he has to plus being in danger and endangering his family so much. and Sam's whole "b-but...unique!" argument bothers me. It would bother me less if she had been called out for it or something.
The other issue, is Vlad and his characterization. To be honest I feel like they were really really lazy with him in this episode and made him come off like someone completely different. Suddenly he cares about money and ruling the world (Urghhhhh) and has forgotten what was his primary motivator before (Maddie, family person who loves me, etc). Like I don't even get why he's demanding a billion dollars when he's already a freakin' billionaire and the mayor to begin with. I never got the impression he was doing all this for the love of money. He's sorta like a guy in his midlife crisis, who never got over the love he lost in high school. The only way I've seen to make Vlad's actions make sense , is to assume he's going through some sort of mental breakdown or something.
(also the fact that banked so much on his promise to make the asteroid intangible only to find when he actually did it that he couldn't touch it because of ectoranium (which he knew it had since he was seen in space going to study it when the ep started). That's mostly because just before Vlad was a millionaire and mayor, he was a scientist like the Fentons, and he's proved to be really methodical before. Altogether I just don't see him being that careless and making promises and banking EVERYTHING on them. Just....doesn't fit with his character IMO)
I could buy a change of motivation if I felt it were better done and fit with the character, but Vlad's characterization here just feels like a bad case of holding the Villain Ball. Also him referring to his ghost half as his more "evil" have was just...cringe. Even when I first saw it and didn't see a lot of these problems...that bothered me.
All in all the basic premise isn't bad, it's just a lot of shoddy characterization type issues. The reason I love the fanfic I mention is because it takes most of those things and finds a way to reconcile them with more in-character characterization.
However this is just my personal opinion on it. I tend to ignore it in my fics I have so many issues with the characterization and such.
Re: So tell me what ya want, what ya really, really want
(Anonymous) 2014-10-01 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)Oh yeah, Sam's "you're not unique!" speech really bothered me as well. And Clad really did make a huge U-turn with regards to his motives; the billion dollar thing never made much sense to me either.
I think that, at the end of the day, I'm just too much of a sucker for reveals and "if we all hold together!" scenes, so PP hit a lot of buttons for me. Though I wouldn't have minded if we could have had a little more reaction to the reveal that a second of silence and then immediate acceptance by Maddie and Jack. They just found out that their son is a ghost and that they have been hunting him all this time!
Re: So tell me what ya want, what ya really, really want
I agree, I also wish we could have gotten a more realistic reaction from Valerie? Like hell this should be at least a little bit shocking to her.
