I agree. It is a genuinely good game. Sure, I guess it's a matter of taste, but as far as RPGs go I can't understand how people can say the storyline is trash and the characters are one dimensional, even if you don't think it's the best game ever, it is a solid game.

I'm not really deep into the JRPG fandom, but I thought FFVII was pretty well liked across the board? Advent Children etc, maybe not, but the original game...?

Eh, the 'cool points' for hating on the Compilation expired a long time ago. I'm sure there are some pockets of rigid old school holdouts, but they're missing out, imo. Besides, the people who joined the fandom with Advent Children have now been in the fandom LONGER than we original game fans had been at the time of the AC release.

Depends how deep you go, but usually the arguments start with VII being better than VI or not. Some rabbit holes fall into the entire franchise being mainstream trash compared to so and so series, etc.

Ehhh, as someone who just recently got back into the game as an adult, I do kind of agree with you. It's by no means a perfect game, but even in spite of its flaws, I still think it holds up today. But tbbh, it is overhyped by some folks/sites, so hype backlash is probably a huge factor in this.

And my other guess for the hate it gets, is that the Compilation's retcons (ugh, Genesis...) and whatnot kind of soured some peoples' views of the original game. It kinda did for me for a while... then I eventually decided to go the discontinuity route (and make fun of 'Dirge of Cerberus' with a friend of mine, too), haha.

Ultimately, if you love the game, that's all that should matter to you.

The Compilation definitely soured my view of what Square Enix thinks of Final Fantasy VII. I don't get how the same people could have written both the original games and the retconned spin-offs. Well, now that I think about it, they weren't the same writers/director, and were operating under completely different companies...

Now I'm nostalgic for Squaresoft, dammit.

FFVII has a bad rep? I thought that FFVII's reputation was pretty much "please remake it, squaresoft." that was prevalent throughout all of it's fans.

Uh, what? I got into Final Fantasy really, really late and all I get is this game being shoved in my face because it's apparently the best Final Fantasy game ever and you're not a true fan if you don't agree.

Meh, I don't really care about haters. The more time you spend in any fandom the more you realize there will always be kill joys and overly critical people and there is nothing you can do to get rid of them. If you genuinely enjoy something then don't let them bother you. There are probably more people that love FF games than there are those who constantly voice their hate.

But while we're on the subject I always thought it was FFVIII that was the butt of all jokes. At least I've seen more people mocking Squall and Rinoa's 'romance' than I have seen people mocking FFVII in general. There is also a lot of hate for FFXII for being boring and political and how Vaan and Penelo are pretty much irrelevant in the big picture.

Everyone forgets about FFIX though. I thought that one had the best fantasy RPG feel of all the FF's. I guess people don't like the chibi-fied character design.

Eh, I don't hate the game itself per se, but I'll admit I've become pretty damn soured on it as a result of a ton of "OMG, THIS IS THE BEST EVAR, AND IF YOU DON'T AGREE/NEVER PLAYED IT THEN YOU SUCK/AREN'T A TRUE GAMER/ETC". I actually don't think I've ever really seen a bad word about it, much less it being the butt of all jokes. [Frankly, I kind of wish I had seen someone say something against it since it would have been a nice breath of fresh air as far as that goes.]

But yeah, I can imagine that at least some of the hate is from folks who, like me, are just so fucking sick of the hype this game gets.
