Well good for you that you haven't had people like the secret-maker constantly color your social interactions I guess?

Really, it's having been on the receiving end of tactics like the secret-maker's game that's made me genuinely wary of sharing my interests with anybody, because my luck they're probably laughing behind my back the minute it's turned.

And I think it's important to know that this isn't a great thing to do to people, and it's sure as shit not a way to make friends.

Haha, yeah. I can't meet you in the middle on this since we're very different people, not just with experiences, but in how we view these things and deal with them (you say tactic, i say icebreaker).

I'm not begrudging you for being burned in the past, after all that's going to rightfully influence your defenses against it happening again. What I'd like is for someone not to over-think taking a risk to talk to someone (irl or online) outside of the comfort zone. For you, they're probably not going to know your history right off the bat. Nonetheless, this is definitely not the way to go to get to know you, or various others in this thread. But it does work, maybe not for everyone obviously since there are no tried and true shortcuts to socializing, and I see nothing wrong with anyone taking initiative to make friends.

I don't think you're quite understanding what's going on in the secret. The secret OP is not asking people to talk about their OCs to break the ice. They're asking people to talk about their OCs with the specific intent of getting off that subject and onto something else ASAP<.i>. That's the part that's shitty and dishonest.

What you're talking about is just getting to know someone by asking about an interest they have that you may not necessarily share. But unless you ask them about the book they're reading with the ulterior motive of getting them to talk about something completely unrelated to that book, you are not doing what the OP is doing.

Also, it bears mentioning that the background picture for the secret is from a comic mocking Mary Sue characters. So even if the OP didn't mean it (though I'm sure they did and are well aware of this), it comes off as the OP only asking them about their OCs so they can silently mock them while they steer the conversation elsewhere.
