I agree with you.

First conversations are casual. Isn't it polite to at least feign interest in the other person's interests on a first meeting? It's a good way to move beyond that and find out things you really do have in common.

If you don't even try, well, you'll just stay in your own little world with your moral bubble untarnished but surely very lonely.

There's a big difference between being alone and being lonely. If all of my "friends" are going to be fake spineless shits for the sake of "politeness," I would rather not have any.

I'm honest with the people I meet, and I have somehow managed to find several people who I genuinely have things in common with and have several friends. I may not be a queen bee, but I'm happy having people I love who I can spend time with. And I didn't have to lie my way into their friendship.
