Or, your friend goes to cons, meets these guys, has an awesome experience (like I did) and continues to be a big fan.

You know you can still be a fan of things or people that are problematic. I don't necessarily think that ignoring them entirely is the best way to go through life, but if you dismissed every person or thing you like for doing/saying/being problematic in some way... there's very little left you could like.

Has Jared said some really douchey things? Oh yeah. The man needs to stay away from Twitter and keep some of his idiotic thoughts to himself. Does that make him a horrible person all together? No. Sorry, but no it doesn't. He was really kind and down-to-earth and did something extra special for a friend of mine that made her (and our) experience meeting him really something amazing.

You're just going to have to accept *gasp* that people like different things than you.
