Ooooh myyyy gooooood these kids who don't know what a drag queen is.

Call in RuPaul, we need an intervention!

lol mte. There's a HUGE difference between being trans and dressing in drag. At most drag shows I've gone to, the performers outright state that they are men who enjoy performing as drag queens, but that they don't identify as women in any way. Hell, a lot of drag pageants have specific rules that state that if you have any kind of mtf surgery at all, then you're disqualified from the competition because they claim it gives an unfair advantage.

I've been interested in crossdressing for a while (cis woman here, just think it'd be fun to try out the different clothes and stuff)

but I've been worried (more recently) about people assuming I'm a (closeted) trans man.
Not because I believe there's anything wrong with that (I actually have a very good friend who's a trans man who I knew even before he started transitioning)
It's just that I'm a woman and I am very secure in my gender identity and body, so I know that definitely doesn't apply to me

I've been wearing men's clothes for decades because they fit my frame and in general they're sturdier than woman's. There's never been an issue with gender confusion.

People aren't going to assume you're a transman, at most, they'll assume you're a lesbian. Trust me, I'm a transman and most people assume I'm a girl who likes men's jeans.

Women can generally "get away" with cross dressing, much more so than men. There are even clothes that mimic men's clothing but are targeted at women (like boyfriend jeans).

In short, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Because there have never been people who started out as drag queens then came out as trans. Never ever. Not a single one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmen_Carrera).

na

so what? a lot of people who once identified as cis also eventually came out as trans. it's still dumb to claim to be 100% positive that someone who explicitly identifies as male is actually genderfluid just because they have a drag persona

DA

(also not OP)

means its not impossible though

especially when the guy in question has been crossdressing since he was a little child and regularly mentions in interviews how conchita is more than just a character and "has always been there"

and how sometimes even when hes spending time with his friends he "can feel his mood changing" and he "becomes that other person" and then his friends call him conchita (and apparently said friends "never get it wrong")

if thats "just drag" ill eat my hat

And maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Either way, that's for the person to say.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-08 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, another member of the identity police, here to save us from the wrong pronoun. Unless you are clairvoyant, take the man at his word. If he changes his mind and he decides that it's any of your business, he will surely say so. The whole "I know more about you that you do, just wait until you're as evolved and enlightened as me and then you will surely concur with MY interpretation of YOUR identity" is just fucking rude.

Seriously, the brightest minds of the last century have failed to come up with a way to categorize gender or sexuality that doesn't have problems with a capital P, and anonymous pinhead can put Tom/Conchita into a shrink-wrapped box on the basis of published interviews.

+1

Fuck off with that shit

(Anonymous) 2014-10-08 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't mean you should assume everyone who does drag is trans. Even if you do think someone is trans but closeted, you should understand that insisting they are and assigning them pronouns is a dick move.

This is also true if you know someone is trans, but they're not out to everyone and want you to use different pronouns in front of, say, their family.
