It really depends what you're watching. Usually shoujo > shounen when it comes to interesting female characters, obviously, but because more shounen are made into anime and the big titles are almost always shounen, that's the kind of stuff that ends up being 'big' - from Dragonball Z to Pokemon to Inuyasha to Naruto blah blah blah. I'm going to stop here before I start complaining on and on about gender-bias in media. At any rate, because the ~~lame and formulaic~~ shounen anime are always in the spotlight, poor female characters seem more common than they actually are. I think. I like to be optimistic about this.

A character can be a housewife and a good character - I just think a lot of chicks (myself included) have their 'sexism radar' set on maximum and automatically flip off anything that starts to hit 'stereotypical'. I know that's why I can't watch Elfen Lied, even though I know it's the kind of show I'd love if I gave it a chance.

Anyway, where am I even going with this? Oh yeah. Talking about shitty females in anime, it always pisses me off that if you say you don't like most of the girls in shounen anime X you get called sexist. WTF?

Shit yeah. Like... alot of Shojo annoys me too, but thats mainly me being a fag (literally) and being all like WHAT SHE SHOULD FUCK HER AND HE SHOULD FUCK HIM. STRAIGHT RELATIONSHIPS ARE WEIIIRD (unless we're talking about Lovely Complex here).

Even in Shojo, female characters seem to be 'idealized' most of the time. ;_; But then you have characters like Tohru (furuba) who are feminine, playing a housekeeper sort of role, yet still very powerful, despite being a ditz. I guess its about the goodnaturedness there.

Idealized, maybe, but idealized in the way that male characters in shounen are idealized - in a way that would be appealing to the same gender, if only because she's not the love interest, HE'S the love interest. I can bitch 'till the end of time about what a flake I find Tsukishi of Hana Yori Dango to be, she's not what I'd call a strong character and her relationship with Tsukasa is fairly conventional.... but the story revolves around her and her relationships and that's what makes it (for me at least) - the female perspective.

Further, while shounen is all about the ~~so easily slashed~~ male competition, shoujo covers relationships between women, something that is barely skirted over in shounen beyond 'oh look! Boobs and more boobs!' *cough* like Orihime/Matsumoto, which I ironically ship. (shounen yuri and harem anime are a whole 'nother ballpark.)

At the end of the day it's kind of just the same gender junk taken from a different (and to me, typically more appealing, though that's largely a matter of taste) angle - though I'll say one thing: as a whole, the cast tends to be more gender-balanced in shoujo (yeah, there's reverse harems and Sailor Moon, but neither is the norm), and I think that says something.
