It's a fucking anime, what do you expect? Female characters in anime/manga are more often than not either overplayed or steriotypical. This is why I RARELY like them.

Not to mention (I haven't seen the series BUT) why can't a character be a housewife AND a good character? Or 'striotypical' girly and a good character. It's RARELY done but it's SO DAMN POSSIBLE.

*stereotypical

Part of why I like the series in the secret, though, is because most of the characters (even the girl ones) aren't your regular ones, even if they're support/'housewife' characters. It's... so crazy.

Yeah, I agree! Just because a female character isn't kicking butt twice daily doesn't mean she can't be a good character.

What IS the series anyway? I keep meaning to check it out.

Wooo yay now I can finally check it out! the character designs are so well done \o\

Riiiiight, because male anime characters are always fleshed-out, realistic, and completely original.

Obviously not, but more often than not they don't take stereotypical roles. Often you'll see a female character being all "damsel in distress", while if there's a male character that is, say, a womanizing sleaze bucket, there's often more thought put into the character as a comedic or scary role... not just "help me help me the bad guy has me" time and time again, or "I'm a snot nosed girl etc etc".

Re: 43

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. Seriously, if you actually believe that, then maybe you need to reexamine stereotypes WITHOUT the misogyny glasses on.

Re: 43

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL.

Dude. You have male steriotypes in anime. Yes. But MORE OFTEN, females are POORLY portrayed in anime. When you have the male, strong guy, warrior type, it's generally in a POSITIVE way. A good, solid "never give up" kind of character that is really, if anything, a positive rolemodel.

Then you have the women in anime, that are often times helpless and depend on men for everything. You have, of course, stronger characters i.e. Hitomi of EscaFlowne who spends as much time fighting for what she believes in as the male cast, but then you have someone like Orihime of Bleach, who (for at least the first 150 eps as I havent been watching for awhile) constantly leans on the male cast, and at times the tomboy female, who is still a masculine character. And when you DO have a character who is out there, defending themselves, they tend to be obnoxious or overplayed, i.e. for some reason this 110 pound girl is beating the shit out of this 250 pound huge musclebound guy. Yes this makes so much sense.

Apparantly me wishing there were more good female characters IN anime = mysogyny.

k, bb.

That I can agree with, but that wasn't what you said. You said men are more fleshed out in anime than women, and that just is not true.

Re: 43

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2007-12-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
No, I said that when men take on steriotypical roles, they still are more fleshed out than women. Ie "throw in a damsel in distress here" vs. "this guy is a tough guy but has a long past of anguish, is in love with someone he can never have, and look, he has a soft side! :D"

Re: 43

[identity profile] kumagoro-usagi.livejournal.com 2007-12-17 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
Errr you're slightly incorrect when it comes to Orihime, in terms of the fact she has repeatedly overturned that stereotype in the latest manga and anime episodes.

Re: 43

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2007-12-17 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Thats why I said 'the first 150, cause I haven't been keeping up with bleach (IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE THIS LONG, TITE ;_;)

Female characters in anime/manga are more often than not either overplayed or steriotypical.

[insert giant stamp of DISAGREEMENT here!]

Methinks your standards are too high.

Re: 43

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2007-12-17 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I am very picky when it comes to anime. More than 70% of the series out there are overhyped and shitty.

Re: 43

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2007-12-17 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* Well, that's your opinion. But "Female characters in anime/manga are more often than not either overplayed or steriotypical" sounded to me like you're trying to pass your opinion off as Simply The Truth.

Re: 43

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2007-12-17 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying this out of a hate for female anime characters, I'm saying it out of a pining for no more shitty ones. Of course, some people are just otaku and think because it comes out of Japan, it's gold, so really shitty series get popular. I'm not naming names here *coughcoughinuyashacoughcough* but, hey.

Re: 43

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2007-12-17 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
It really depends what you're watching. Usually shoujo > shounen when it comes to interesting female characters, obviously, but because more shounen are made into anime and the big titles are almost always shounen, that's the kind of stuff that ends up being 'big' - from Dragonball Z to Pokemon to Inuyasha to Naruto blah blah blah. I'm going to stop here before I start complaining on and on about gender-bias in media. At any rate, because the lame and formulaic shounen anime are always in the spotlight, poor female characters seem more common than they actually are. I think. I like to be optimistic about this.

A character can be a housewife and a good character - I just think a lot of chicks (myself included) have their 'sexism radar' set on maximum and automatically flip off anything that starts to hit 'stereotypical'. I know that's why I can't watch Elfen Lied, even though I know it's the kind of show I'd love if I gave it a chance.

Anyway, where am I even going with this? Oh yeah. Talking about shitty females in anime, it always pisses me off that if you say you don't like most of the girls in shounen anime X you get called sexist. WTF?

Re: 43

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2007-12-17 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Shit yeah. Like... alot of Shojo annoys me too, but thats mainly me being a fag (literally) and being all like WHAT SHE SHOULD FUCK HER AND HE SHOULD FUCK HIM. STRAIGHT RELATIONSHIPS ARE WEIIIRD (unless we're talking about Lovely Complex here).

Even in Shojo, female characters seem to be 'idealized' most of the time. ;_; But then you have characters like Tohru (furuba) who are feminine, playing a housekeeper sort of role, yet still very powerful, despite being a ditz. I guess its about the goodnaturedness there.

Re: 43

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2007-12-17 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Heheh, well, you're kinda screwed with most mainstream media there. ><

Idealized, maybe, but idealized in the way that male characters in shounen are idealized - in a way that would be appealing to the same gender, if only because she's not the love interest, HE'S the love interest. I can bitch 'till the end of time about what a flake I find Tsukishi of Hana Yori Dango to be, she's not what I'd call a strong character and her relationship with Tsukasa is fairly conventional.... but the story revolves around her and her relationships and that's what makes it (for me at least) - the female perspective.

Further, while shounen is all about the so easily slashed male competition, shoujo covers relationships between women, something that is barely skirted over in shounen beyond 'oh look! Boobs and more boobs!' *cough* like Orihime/Matsumoto, which I ironically ship. (shounen yuri and harem anime are a whole 'nother ballpark.)

At the end of the day it's kind of just the same gender junk taken from a different (and to me, typically more appealing, though that's largely a matter of taste) angle - though I'll say one thing: as a whole, the cast tends to be more gender-balanced in shoujo (yeah, there's reverse harems and Sailor Moon, but neither is the norm), and I think that says something.
