I agree that the swag element does seem to be getting more and more prominent, and honestly I have to say I don't even understand it.

Owning physical things has never really been that interesting to me, certainly not to the point where it would become a dominant part of any hobby for me. I mean, different strokes, of course. There's nothing wrong with it. It's just surprising to me that it has developed so much.

I don't tend to do much on the merchandise front, either. I have a friend who's very into it, but it's never really been my thing. I think that's why I'm noticing it more - because I'm not used to being targeted with that kind of advertising all the time and tuned into that whole subculture, when that side of it increases, my main response is to stare at it all in bemusement.
