Pokémon fandom's majority dudes though.

Like I said, I never got into that part of the fandom. So I wouldn't know!

(Anonymous) 2014-10-09 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
woah woah, according to who?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-09 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
To the official site's online statistics. Also check the official facebook page demographics.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-09 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
um soooo Facebook and official websites have... what to do with fandom, exactly? Fandom isn't clicking "like" on a Facebook page.

Great gatekeeping.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-09 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
the fuck does that mean

(Anonymous) 2014-10-10 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but I believe they're saying that the anon in question is attempting to be a 'gatekeeper' for what does and does not count as fandom by defining facebook likes as not being fandom

(Anonymous) 2014-10-10 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
but it's not fandom. fandom, at least I imagine everyone here's definition of fandom, is involvement in a fan community. Therefore, not just "yeah I read LOTR and liked it" but "I participate in a community, online or offline, of fans". That's why we have the phrase "in the fandom" (i.e. "I like it but I'm not in fandom" or whatever).

Clicking like on Facebook, or visiting an official website (assuming one is simply going for info, and not participating in message boards or whatever) objectively is not fandom.

If we're saying, does it have more female fans or male fans, that stuff -may- enter the conversation but I frankly don't see how that's even a great indicator of how many people actually play Pokemon and enjoy it.

All the Pokemon fans I follow on tumblr are ladies. It's quite a big fandom so it's easily possible never to come across the weird stuff.

Having said that, I did read my first ever Pokemon porn a few months back (Lysander/Prof Sycamore slash) and it was great, after I got over that whole thing of it being Pokémon porn, and my childhood, my precious childhood, it burns!

There's a good chance you're just hanging out in fandom areas that are mostly populated by dudes, and possibly brushing off female fans.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-10 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it's not like a fandom targeted at young boys will have more guy fans than girl.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-10 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
are you saying that with a straight face, or..?

Interesting assertion. I think it used to be targeted at young boys but now it's pretty much just targeted at kids/people in general.
