I kind of agree. It is more mainstream now so I imagine there's more of it (seems like most everything has a video game, comic book or action figure now) but collecting has always been a thing.

I never got too into Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh! because they seemed like such expensive hobbies (I knew someone in high school that had binders full of those cards. I know that shit has to add up), and I already had an expensive hobby. (Gaming.)

Same here. I didn't have a lot of pocket money as a kid and my parents didn't give me expensive presents, so there were a lot of hobbies I just couldn't get into because I couldn't afford them: all those trading card games, like you said, but I also never had a gameboy or a playstation or anything like that. I certainly didn't get to buy entire seasons of TV shows on video, or buy specific fandom magazines. And all those things already existed back then. And sure, to an extent you could always participate in nerd culture by borrowing stuff from other people, but there were a lot of things you were excluded from if you didn't have the money for comics, rulebooks, games, magazines and so on (or if you weren't willing to spend money on those things).

In a way I'd almost say that things are not necessarily less commercial these days, but the commercial side is more optional. The internet has made things available for free or for a lot less money so that even poorer people can participate in nerd culture, without having to save up money or borrow everything from less poor friends.

Definitely, my participation in nerd culture has become cheaper with the internet. Fan content is great!

I now at least halfway choose what games/books I buy depending on the fandom surrounding them. More value for money. I spend 90% of my time enjoying the fandom rather than the original. I love it!

I def see what you mean in that a lot of the commercial stuff being sold now is more for fun and not a requirement. You can watch the show, play the game, etc, and not buy the action figures, or the statues, or the clothing and accessories... there's a lot of optional stuff available but it doesn't usually have a huge impact on your experience (and knowledge of the material) in fandom. Most everything from the actual source materials can be found online now, so accessing the stuff you're interested in is a lot easier. So is buying stuff, but again, it's not a necessity in most cases.

YGO kinda is expensive, but it doesn't really have to be. Depends on how you play. I was actually into YGO before getting into gaming, which is probably part of the reason I use Steam almost exclusively. xD

(MTG is still more expensive tho, I mean holy shit)

why yes I am making this largely irrelevant comment bc I'm still kinda sad that I'm the only YGO player on this comm :(

No way do I believe you're the only YGO player in the comm! We have a pretty diverse membership, someone must be into it! Maybe make a post one day asking who plays card games! (And which ones.)

Anyway, I always thought YGO looked fun, I just didn't want to get into the habit of collecting the cards. The anime was entertaining though, but I never payed enough attention to understand the actual game... >. >

If you ever want to learn to play, hit me up. There are programs through which you can play online for free :)
