I tend to enjoy this kind of storyline if it specifically averts the "anything but gay!" thing and actually prompts the character to do some introspection. If it simply reinforces that cliche, things get boring fast. I still have a massive soft spot for Mulan even though it falls into that trap to a degree, but Twelfth Night and its quick, tie-up-loose-ends, "Phew! Now I can bang her!" ending is such a disappointment for that very reason.
