I was spanked. My parents have said they regret it. I believe that hitting a child is wrong, regardless of the reason, and I also think that it is not actually an effective form of punishment. You just teach them to fear you, not to do the right thing.

I don't think that's true -- I was never afraid of my mom for spanking me. But it sure made me want to avoid doing the thing that would get me spanked -- which is the entire point.

it didn't for me. It just made me afraid of getting hit. Taking away something I liked was the only punishment that ever actually worked on me. And regardless, I think there are other punishments and spanking should only ever be a last resort if nothing else works. Hitting should never be a first choice. And that is what spanking is. If an adult did that to another adult without that adult's permission we'd call it assault. Why is hitting children any different?
