Re: Possibly triggery stuff - adding the question in the second comment

People of colour, are you triggered by someone saying "I wish I wasn't white?" I had this happen on a forum the other day and someone said they were extremely triggered by this, and I'm curious to get everyone's opinion.

I know I wouldn't want to be black, or Irish, but I wouldn't mind being Chinese or Japanese. Asian girls get so much privilege in modern life. Far more than white girls get. If you are Asian, you can snag a man and an easy life just like that. Make sure you put plenty of his money away in a secret box, and you are set for life.

Man, the trolls are really pulling out all the stops today. What made you so ambitious this time around? A hearty breakfast?

It's true though. Rich white guys love Asian girls, and they let them away with so much. Same with the cops, they never pull over a cute Asian girl or if they do they never ticket her. If I were Asian, I'd be kissing goodbye to working in some stupid deadend job and hello to sexy funtimes with my rich boyfriend paying out as much as I could get from him. I'd be putting that away too, so that I wouldn't have to go back to an office job when he moved on. Either that or forgetting my pill and cashing in on his alimony check. If rich white guys want to fetishize Asian girls, then I wish I was one just so I could cash in.

As a reference for future trolling, you don't get "alimony" when you have a child. You get "child support". Alimony is spousal support after a divorce, and it's rare to be awarded that anymore in most states unless you've been a primary caregiver out of the workforce for some time, and even then it's usually for a short period of time until you find other employment.

You need to look this shit up beforehand if you want to look like this is a thing you really think and have given some thought to, son.

lmao no.

Though I bet you if that wish came true after a month or so they'd want to switch back real quick.

I'm sorry but this just proves the word "trigger" has been taken completely out of context by fandom. Offended? Upset? That I can believe - but triggered?

Re: Possibly triggery stuff - adding the question in the second comment

(Anonymous) 2014-10-14 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm personally not triggered. But it's maybe a bit of a layered reaction. On one level, I'm frustrated because, hey! You should be happy to be who you are! Black, white, whatever!

On the other hand, I'm like, why? (complete with side eye)

To be fair, I've had my share of identity issues, but it was never I wish I wasn't "x", it was more, I wish I was "Y"--that is to say in addition to my current cultural heritage, i would wish I could also have "Y" heritage, thus not negating my "x"ness. Although that was something I felt because I didn't feel connected with my own culture. I've come to terms with my culture and myself and still learning more.

I figure if I'm being cynical, I can be "oh, please, you just want to be "exotic" or "know the *struggle*" or whatever will make you feel more special. However, I figure people just don't feel satisfied or connected to their own culture/history, so in the end I just feel for the person and encourage them to embrace their history.

"extremely triggered"??

Or, "pay attention to me, I'm traumatized and here's why!"

It triggers my laughter, so yes.

Honestly, I'll think they're a naive weirdo who probably has silly reasons for wanting to be EXOTIC. But remember that I would love to be a white guy, albeit a handsome and tall one, for stupider reasons (ie: being a hot white guy).

Personally, no, but I might roll my eyes a lot.

I don't get what you mean by "triggered" in this context. First of all, I've never once heard someone say that. It's an interesting idea, but I've honestly never heard anyone say anything like that, nor could I imagine why they'd say that, unless they just had self-esteem/image issues and wished they were someone else entirely.

I on the other hand once thought my life would be a little easier if I weren't asian and if I were instead white. Then I realized I didn't care and I remember that I liked being the race that I am.
