I don't know. It just appeals to me. Something about a human being, an intelligent creature, so lost in whatever they're addiction is that they lose all regard for things they should hold dear. It's like a personal fall from grace, a descent into madness - the loss of control, the seediness, the dependence, the changes in personality, the haggard look, the ingestion or injection of the drugs themselves. It just hits me right for some reason. There's a certain dark glamor in it for me.

I don't find it attractive in real life in the least, and want nothing more than for real life substance abusers to get help and kick their habit. But in fictional characters? I find it extremely sexy - and as so many people can't tell the difference between liking something in fiction and liking something in real life, I'd never admit to this with my name attached.

I understand what you mean by liking something as a fictional trope versus a real-life characteristic. There's more than one thing I would not admit to without anonymity for the same reason.

Would you say that fictional drug use imparts an attractive vulnerability to characters that cannot necessarily be overcome through their natural genius/good looks/etc?

This sort of thing is very prominent in fandoms I've been in in the past and the present, and I'd like to understand it better.

Maybe it is the vulnerability. There's definitely something about the loss of control that comes with drugs. The scene in hard Core Logo where Billy Talent is out of his head on acid and E and licks a knife? I could watch it over and over and over again and it never stops being fucking sexy. And every time House pops a Vicoden? I just get a little thrill.

I don't really know. Hell, maybe it's just because I grew up with so many rock stars glamorizing drug use on stage and in song. I don't like it in fandom, though, just in canon.
