Well, firstly, I don't know if "ironic" is the word you want to be using. I really wish people wouldn't use that word as often as they do. What's ironic about the situation described?

Second, as others have pointed out, the double standard isn't nearly as obvious in the sports world as it is elsewhere. People tend to idolize athletes to ridiculous amounts, and treat them like real life superheroes: sportsmen both white and black the world over have gotten away with stuff they shouldn't have.
