Perrish Cox and probably Jameis Winston and I'm sure there's others I'm forgetting (unfortunately)

Also, Ray Lewis might have killed a guy and that never stopped him from being a fan favorite

It's fucked up that any rapists still play in the NFL, or any sports league, regardless of race.

I don't think there's a strong case to be made that the race of the player plays a significant role in whether or not that happens. I think the only thing that's changed is that the media and fan culture has started to take it more seriously.

I'm not sure what your argument here is. just because some white football players are getting away with terrible shit doesn't mean that black football players who have done terrible shit should get away with it too. there may be a double standard, but I don't exactly feel sorry for black players who do things like beat the shit out of their girlfriends and children and then realize that they fucked up their career. if you're trying to say that players should lose their chance at playing professional football if they commit crimes like that regardless of their race, then sure I can agree with that.

"I think it's just bitterly ironic and a bit sickening that a white rapist can continue to play for the NFL while various black players face the possibility of never playing football again."

I would love to know who the OP thinks is the "white rapist."

I'm assuming it's Ben Roethlisberger. Although there's probably others.

I'm assuming that you didn't mean for your secret to come off this way, but it almost sounds like you're sympathizing with black players who get kicked out of the NFL because they commit atrocious crimes. I think everyone here can agree that white and black players should face the same consequences though

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sympathizing or in anyway excusing the black players actions. But I think it's shitty that a player like Big Ben 'allegedly' rapes a woman (to say nothing of the shoddy police investigation afterwards), gets a suspension, gets it reduced, and gets to move on with his career, while black guys end up suspended far longer, with their careers possibly ended. As far as I'm concerned Big Ben's career should have been fucking over when that rape occured and it sickens me that it hasn't.

Let's assume guilty until proven innocent. That should work out well.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
They should ALL be in jail for the rest of their lives regardless of race (or shot point blank.)

I'm going to assume the OP doesn’t pay attention to college football. I'm looking at you Florida State and Univ of FL.

The same FSU that suspended someone for half a game initially? Or did something else happen...I prefer to ignore FSU whenever possible.

To be fair, college sports as a whole seem to be irrecovebly broken.

Doesn't seem to be holding Ma'lik Richmond back. He, apparently, has a bright future ahead of him.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-25 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well, firstly, I don't know if "ironic" is the word you want to be using. I really wish people wouldn't use that word as often as they do. What's ironic about the situation described?

Second, as others have pointed out, the double standard isn't nearly as obvious in the sports world as it is elsewhere. People tend to idolize athletes to ridiculous amounts, and treat them like real life superheroes: sportsmen both white and black the world over have gotten away with stuff they shouldn't have.
