Well if I understand the theory correctly, having the name Cohen is not same thing as being a Cohen. Last names have been A Thing among Jews for several hundred years -- in that time our records have been obliterated by everything from the Holocaust to shtetl fires. You could have a very distant relative who wa</>s a Cohen, but not be one yourself.

Any way it's hard to be certain. In all my years in the Jewish community I think I heard first-hand about two Cohens, and neither of them had that as their last name.

While you're right that it's not always a signifier, considering that being a Cohen and family names are both patrilineal, there's a reasonable chance of it.
