He's a kid, and he's not the typical super-powered cartoon kid that's far too self-aware. Those are entertaining too, but I give the show points for straying from it. I can see why Steven would be annoying to watch though.

I thought it was more probably nostalgia goggles than japanophile.

It would depend on your taste, or what you consider good. Though I've got an admittedly low bar for what entertains me, there's never been a plethora of "good" shows at any time.
