I miss forums. Where you could actually have drawn-out thoughtful discussions. I'm old :(

*adds fist*

While I joke about feeling old, I'm well aware that I'm pretty young when it comes to history of fandom platforms...and even I miss forums!

This is why LJ worked so well, I think - it had the best elements of forums and Tumblr's blog structure in it. It could be used to share images and multimedia, or long texts, with a sort of "attached" forum to each post in the form of a comments section.

That's a good point about livejournal. When it was, ah, structured properly, it did sort of have it all. But for me, it never quite duplicated the forum experience. I think the big difference is that most communities on livejournal were screened, so you couldn't start a new thread in real time. And, yes, on the one hand, there was a sort of anarchy in being able to do that; but on the other hand, you didn't have to wait to start a discussion or worry that your topic wouldn't make the cut.

All of that said, I do think one of the big strengths of livejournal was that it encouraged really long form discussion. People could dig deep into things without worrying about tl;dr.

Wait, really? Barely half the communities I was involved with were screened, if that, and even then it was usually just when people were posting fic to a community or something. Once something was posted, it was pretty rare to see comments screened.

Oh, wow, apologies for the miscommunication. I meant new posts, not comments in general.

Most of my old comms allowed posting access to all members too. I can only think of a handful that didn't, and those were usually e.g. 'digest' type comms, or those hosting scans or other media.

Maybe you were just in fandoms/comms that weren't open to new posts that way?

That is a possibility. I might have just gotten really unlucky with my chosen fandoms.

Still, even then, unless there was a recent spate of bad trolling or something, I didn't see screening that much. I'm surprised to hear there were circles where it was even common, letalone "most".

What fandoms where you in?
Edited (I am sick and tired of these motherfucking tab keys being where the motherfucking enter keys are supposed to be!) 2014-10-28 03:15 (UTC)

I was mostly involved with Battlestar Galactica during my lj days, with some Final Fantasy and Farscape mixed in there, as well. Based on what you and the anon above have said, I think I may just have been very unlucky.

(Also, saw you've replied to the other post, but I am dead tired. I'll check it out and respond tomorrow)

(And what kind of Bizarro World computer puts tab keys where enter keys should be? o.O)

They're not actually there, that was just me being snarky with a quote. I'm typing most of this one-handed (eating with the other), but my typing muscle-memory doesn't always catch the memo, resulting in me hitting tap+enter instead of enter twice when I'm not paying attention.

And no worries, I'm probably going to have to go to bed, myself (I am a night owl signing up for a career that'll have me waking up at 4:30 in the morning for the next decade or so; I fucking hate my life choices, sometimes).

Let's mourn together...

I still use forums extensively, but then I'm German and we're so backward when it comes to fandom/social media platforms/etc.

Haha, maybe it's a European thing, then...

(Anonymous) 2014-10-28 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Now now. We're not backwards. We just know a good thing when we see it and keep using it instead of jumping to the newest platform fad.

*cough*
